Please please please send healing vibes to my handsome boy Beau. He has been sick all weekend, I thought it was just a bug, we took him to the vet today and he has a blockage in his stomach. He has to have surgery tomorrow. I have been crying and crying. Please someone can you tell me what to expect? I was not coherent enough to speak rationally to the vet at the time and now I am frantic because I don't know what to expect. Do they cut them open to remove a blockage, or can they pull it back up through the throat?

I know if anyone understands what we are going through it will be you guys.

Never had this happen to me(did have to have fur baby have major surgery for herniea though!)...come close though cos them boxers love to eat everything!!! From what I have read and seen on tv, they do cut the dog open and reomove the blockage...

I hope all go well and your fur baby feels better soon. They normally bounce back really quick! Keep positive thoughts!!

Poor Beau! That has to be really scary for you. I really don't know what to tell you as I have never experienced anything like that. Have they done X-rays to determine where the blockage is? I would assume they would have to cut him open, but maybe there are other ways they can do it.. Anyway, best of luck and we are sending healing vibes your way. Please keep us updated!

x ray confirms the blockage

The vet took an x-ray and confirmed the blockage. :( I am so scared for my baby. He lost 5 lbs since he was last weighed (about 2 weeks ago). I know he is alone and scared at the animal hospital. The vet did say we caught it early as he was fine on Friday. He said sometimes people don't catch it for a couple of weeks. I hope my baby will be fine.

I am so sorry to hear that Beau's not feeling well. I will definately keep you all in my prayers both for the surgery and for a speedy recovery. At least you know what is wrong and can fix it -- I'm sure he'll be back to himself very soon!

I am so sorry that Beau has a blockage. They will probably have to cut him open, unless he manages to pass it in the meantime.

I am sending positive healing vibes your way.

I'm so sorry your little boy has to have surgery. I have been through this twice with Chance. Once he ate his leather leash and became obstructed. They will have to actually go in (cut) through his abdomen and then cut into his stomach. If there a foreign body in the intestines then they will have to cut that open also. Most likely he will not be able to eat for about 12-24 hours so he will need to be on IV fluids. After he is aloud to eat again, I would offer smaller more frequent meals for about a week or two so his stomach does not expand too much. He will need to stay quite (ha-ha I know) for at least 7-10 days while he heals. Chance was up and standing a few hours after his surgery was finished, hopefully Beau will bounce back fast!!!

Sending positive and speedy recovery vibes Beau's way!!! Keep us updated.

Sorry to hear about Beau. Yes, they will need to open him to remove the blockage. Did they say where the blockage was located--I am guessing in the intestinal track--that's where they usually are. They will open his abdomen and then his intestine to remove the blockage. He will have a surgery incision similar to a spay incision, only larger, of course. He will need the same amount of recovery time and rest--about a week or so, no jumping, running, playdates, etc. They will probably want to start him back on a bland diet at first to let his system heal and not have to work so hard, so I would suggest the famous boiled rice/chicken with a bit of cottage cheese for the first few days probably. Sending healing vibes for poor Beau! :)

boxers4life2001, can you tell me how long Chance had to stay in the hospital? Is it in and out, or do they keep them for a couple of days?

Jillsboxer, his blockage is in his stomach. I hope he will eat the bland diet when he gets home, I was feeding it to him all weekend thinking he had a bug. Hopefully he won't associate chicken and rice with vomiting.

Thanks everyone for the positive thoughts, I am really appreciative of all of you!
