So last night, more like morning, I guess since it was around 3:30, Mabel started howling in her crate. I mean she was howling like I've never heard her howl before. That was scary enough, but then she started rattling the crate door with her nose like she was trying to break out. She's never done that before, ever. She *likes* her crate and will go in without any prodding on our part so to see her practically turning herself inside out trying to escape was weird. We thought she probably had to go outside like RIGHT NOW (she has IBD) so we rushed to let her out. Instead of heading for the door, though, she charged across the hall to our son's room and started scratching at the door. We tried to haul her away from the door but she insisted she was getting in there...she paced, she whined, she pawed incessantly at the door. When we finally decided to open the door to see what the heck had her so upset (maybe that darned mouse we've been trying to catch was in there?) we heard wheezing. When we turned on the light it was obvious what the problem was...our son was having a severe asthma attack and needed help.
We had to give Sam (he's 10) two breathing treatments and the whole time he was sucking on the tube Mabel paced and whined at his feet. When Sam started breathing more clearly, she sat and put her head on his lap and just looked up at him. When the attack was over and he was ready to go back to bed, Mabel insisted on sleeping next to him. She's never spent a night out of her crate, but last night, we let her sleep on Sam's bed.
Okay, I knew my dog was super, but I didn't know she had super powers. If she hadn't started howling and we'd slept through Sam's attack...oh, I can't even think about it...
We're thinking of getting Mabel a tiara and a velvet cape, but in the meantime, I went to the butcher this morning and got her a giant marrow bone instead. She's in Boxer glory right now with that thing.
