After reading the responses from a couple of members yesterday, I immediately took Sugar to the vet and had her checked out. A skin scrape came back positive for demodex and she also has a staff infection.

Twice daily she is to be given 500mg of Keflex and .9ml of Ivermectin. This morning a lyme(?) bath/dip was administered. She smells a little like sulphur, but not as bad as I imagined she would. The licking and nibbling at the irritated areas seems to have stopped. We came home at about 2 pm and played outside for a good amount of time. Her spirits are good and she looks happier. Thank God! Was so worried when I saw those SAD eyes. It's good to see her in better spirits.

I'll be keeping a close eye on her to make sure her condition continues to improve.

After becoming a member to BW and reading all the heath threads about mange, I alos was concerned for my baby Bradie, beacuse of his hairloss. I took him to our vet yesterday also to do a scrapping. It was negative but he said that theres 2 kinds of mange 1 that i cannot even pronounce or spell (LOL) so our vet will do another in 1 month. Hopfully that one will come out negitive also. I am sorry to hear that you furbaby has it though, and hope he's feeling better.

sampson my 6 month old has d-mange. what I do not think that you know is all dogs have this parasite on them it is just that puppys or ill dogs could produce more.the dip is not very good for your little guy. I know the vet's say it is the only way but if you look at threads on this site you will see that there are other options.I chose not to go with the dip's instead I have added vitamins to his food and give him brocoli. the dips are usally any where from 4 to 12 at once a week.that is alot of posion.if you change his diet and try not to get him stressed he should be able to get the mite's under control. yes it takes a while but it also takes a while for the dip's maybe you could ask your vet about an ointment named goodwinal I think that is how you spell it. I can tell you that sampson's mange is getting better without posion. good luck and hope you find another option

Roxie

Roxie is also battling this terrible mange. It breaks my heart just to look at her b/c she has several places where the hair loss has gotten as big a quarter. We have been giving Roxie an internal medication called Intervectin as well as an antibiotic twice a day. We have been giving her these medications for the last 10 days and to to be honest we haven't seen much improvement, she is still licking areas on her feet. I wish there was something else I could do to help speed up the recovery but from what I hear it is just a slow process. She goes back for a check up next wed. I'm hoping that they will tell me she is getting better. Good luck with your battle and I will let you know if I find any helpful hints.

update on Sugar Mama

Thanks for all the well wishes and useful advice! Sugar is due for a follow up in a couple of days. She doesn't seem to be itching and biting too much now. I'll be looking for vitamins to supplement her diet as well with the ointment that was mentioned. I just hope the skin scrape comes back negative. She's also due for a CBC because she was a bit anemic as of her last readings. Is this common for pups? The supplementation is positively a logical step.

Thanks again, and Sugar sends her love.

Rescued pups

Both of my pups came from a rescue, in fact they're brother and sister. Well, we got Sabastian first and his d-mange wasn't nearly as bad as Bela's when we picked her up. She had gone several months longer without the meds. She is now on the ivermectin and I can see that her color is getting darker and she is feeling softer. Her legs are still pretty bare, but I know that Sebastian did improve greatly with patience. I am going to look for the other options to help her along. She already gets compliments, just imagine what she'll look like in full form! I skipped the dip for both as well, hope Sugar mama gets better!
