Ok, this is a weird one. A little background - Bella is 9 years ago, was recently diagnosed with cardiomiopathy when she had 3 fainting episodes in one day. Around same time, they also found mass on her liver and we have not addressed that yet since we needed to see how she'd do on heart meds. She's on 80mg sotalol/day and has had no collapses since and is responding well to medicine. So we're contemplating what next steps should be in regards to liver.

Last night when we were administering her heart medicine, I noticed her bite is VERY different. It really freaked me out. She has a pretty normal bite and I also see her little top teeth...etc. When I went to get her to open her mouth her top teeth are no longer visible and all you see is gums. Its as though the top part of her jaw has dropped and she suddenly has severe underbite. She wasn't acting normal and my parents who had been watching her during the day said she was very lathargic all day. We decided to take her to emergency. The vet did exam and says yes, "she has underbite, but her jaw is working perfectly normally" Nothing was broken, dislocated...etc. I tried explaining to him that she didn't have that before but he couldn't offer me any explanation. My husband agrees it looks very different and today my Mom came by to take a look. She said it's absolutely different and didn't look that way when she gave her medicine in morning. She said she was able to give her medicine with no problem.

We're waiting for her regular vet to give us a call back. But I just don't want to be told everything is "normal" when I know my dog and I know her bite is off. She was able to eat wet food today, so that was a relief! But, something is clearly wrong.

Anyone have any experience like this?? I could not find anything online. Closest thing is "jaw drop" but that doesn't seem to be it either.

Don't have any advice just a suggestion....
Take pictures with you to the vets office to show before of the "normal" you know and they can see the difference??

What about Masticatory Muscle Myositis? Inflammation of the Masticatory (chewing) muscles can cause changes in the way the bite and face look.

Thank you both. With her mouth closed she doesn't look any different, so unfortunately before pictures will not show any difference.

You may be onto something with the Masticatory Muscle Myositis...I will chat with vet about that tomorrow.

thank you!
