Boxer Pal
My female 13month (spayed) just started getting aggressive in the past 2 weeks. The first time I grabbed her collar to take her to her crate and she growled and snapped at me, did it to husband another time as well:( Never had crate issues before been using it since day one. Now just today I brought home a nuckle bone and she hid and when I get near her she growls and goes at me to bite, snapping and snarling. She did the same when my DH got near her too. I give her 2 raw marrow bones a week and have given nuckle bones before and she has never done this. Normally she will let me pet her head and even gets on the couch with me with it. Whats happening ? I'm very worried about this :( I have 3 kids and want to stop this behavior right away. She has not done this with her food and she is a only pet we have. She has had obedience and spends time with other dogs. Do I not give her bones anymore? Take it away? I have no idea what to do because its not all the time. Help please.

Nipped

This needs to be nipped in the butt right away this is the age where she is begining to test her ground and see where her place in the family/pack if you will is. She is testing her limits, and it sounds like she is getting bad due to possibly getting away with it... I would consult a trainer because it does sound like she is getting out of hand and with small chidren i would be concerned. I would not be concerned that she is a bad dog this is her testing her limits but if you do not correct this right away before she does get out of control.

What were the circumstances around grabbing her collar? That is a threatening gesture to dogs (going for their neck) and a lot of dogs have issues with it.

If you do a search for resource guarding on here you'll get some good info. A good thing is to get her used to realizing that when you take something from her that she gets something equally good in return. It may mean spending a long time "trading" her bones or toys for another bone or yummy treat.

Might be worth getting her thryoid checked as well. We recently had a problem with sudden aggression in our 19 month old boxer......he was growling, snapping, etc. Once he started thyroid replacement he was back to his usual happy, loving self.

She also could be hitting her teenage phase....and is going to start testing you and forgetting everything she knows. Another obedience class would probably help, or even starting something new like Rally or agility with her.

I would get the Thyroid test done as soon as possible. I could see sudden aggression with another dog or new people but never with the hand that feeds you.
