Such a thing as "temporary" foster care?

We have two boxers, and we love them to death!

However, we are moving, and we've only found one house that allows dogs, but only ONE dog. So we have to give one up for now, heartbreaking as it is. I feel like I'm giving up one of my children, and my kids are devastated. (no more than I am)

We will be purchasing the house within 6 months, which means no more "1 dog only" rule.

Is there such a thing as temporay foster care? I know, probably not, who is going to take in a boxer, fall in love with him, and then give him back?

I know this is a shot in the dark, a "wishful thinking" post.

Any thoughts or suggestions are truly appreciated!

Is there a relative near you that could help out?

This is a strange rule, why allow only one dog? I understand they are trying to keep out those that have more dogs than holes in their head but if they're going to let one in, what's one more? Good luck with your situation.

Did you ask if you can have 2. Maybe pay an extra fee.

We have rental property and we allow pets. We allow cats and any breed of dog. No limit on the number or weight, but the tenant must declare the pet(s) and pay an additional nonrefundable cleaning fee. We have a separate pet agreement for EACH pet with the pet’s name, proof or declaration of ownership (ie the tenant must own the pet), type (cat, dog), breed, date of birth, vets name and vaccination history (we outline required vaccinations). The tenant is also required to sign a liability waiver holding us harmless in the event of a bite or damage to others property. We further require that all pets over the age of 6 months be altered as we do not allow breeding activities on our property.

Next the owner must agree to clean up after the pet. That means clean litter boxes. Accidents in the house promptly cleaned. AND pick up the "land mines" outside.

We are STRICT! But, I can honestly say that with these guidelines I have found pet owners to be very responsible and preferred tenants. You might suggest these guidelines to your landlord.

I would suggest appealing to the landlord like the above suggestion first. If that doesn't work, start begging to all friends and family who love your babies.

We are going through a similar situation. Our apartment complex decided to ban all dogs over 15 pounds, and not grandfather any in. Sooo, that meant no Lucky with us. We appealed to management (to no avail). So, Lucky is currently staying with DBF's parents. We do everything possible to make it easy on them. Take care of bathing him, take him to the park, give him his medicines, purchase all the food, bring it over, etc.

If you still can't find anyone to take in your baby, appeal to BW! We found that several people on BW offered to help us out, and take Lucky in. This all happened in November, and we will be moving into our house (it's being built) in April. So, several people offered to take him in. You might be suprised by how generous everyone here is.

Try posting on the Reciprocal boxer-sitting forum. You can offer free boxer sitting for someone else in exchange once you move into your house. You never know, it's worth a try.

I've tried to appeal to the landlord. We did have another house picked, we had the lease in our hands that stated 2 dogs were fine (with an additional pet fee), and when they found out that they were boxers they wouldn't rent to us. Apparently boxers are on a few insurance companies "black list".

None of our family members can take him, but I do have some phone calls out to some friends.

This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am looking into the local boxer rescue, but that's going to be our very last resort, because it's so final. The kids seem to think that if we go that route, we they will be able to go and visit our baby. I'm going to post on the sitting forums, and see if anyone would be willing to take him in long-term.

I did find some info on banned dogs on insurance policies. Many have black lists for dog breeds but I found Boxer on only a couple. Also found many insurance companies who have NO breed restrictions. None of my policies have breed restrictions.

There is a lot of talk about “Punish the deed not the Breed”. Also found an interesting book… “Dogs Bite, But Balloons and Slippers are More Dangerous”. Interesting title.

Boxer Newbie…. I’d keep checking all your options. Looking for ‘doggie sitters’, maybe longer term boarding arrangement. Different rental housing. Is it possible you could purchase a house sooner than 6 months. Maybe something less than what you really want.
