Cone is off!

Well BF took her to the vet for a checkup and he said the cone was probably causing more trouble so it's gone! Yeppeee!!!! :) Still need to keep her quiet and she's not allowed left alone without it but its so cool to see her without the silly thing. She is just a happy as I am and I think she knows if she scratches it goes back on. Now to start on that playing that I've been hanging out for (whilst keeping her quiet of course). Thanks everyone

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to visit sooner than now. Tess had glaucoma in one of her eyes, and I actually put a post up in the health forum on the subject (I should really take the time to go back and bring it up to date for members like you, that could really use the info).

Anyway, to make a really long story somewhat short, we had 2 options from our eye doctor. One, to remove her eye completely and have a prosthesis installed, downside being that the eye would no longer blink or move in unison with the other; or two, an intrascleral implant, where the bad tissue is removed from the eyeball and replaced with silicone, leaving all the muscles and nerves intact and the eye still functioning in unison with the other. Since she was already blinded in that eye from the massive pressure the glaucoma put on it, either option was viable, but I chose the intrascleral implant for aesthetic reasons, and the price difference was only about $400, which to me was not reason enough to consider the first option.

I can prepare you for the fact that recovery is a pretty long deal, especially trying to keep them quiet - that was probably more difficult than anything else, except for that stupid collar - which she succeeded at tearing off in the middle of the first night. I took her to work with me every day for about a month, because she couldn't be left alone - especially with Tenaia at home too.

I don't know how old your Storm is, but Tess was 9 when she had the surgery, and we just got a clean bill of health from the eye doc (Tess is 10 1/2 now) last month. No recheck for 6 months!!

I'm very glad your baby is doing well. It is so hard to see them ill. I didn't really realize how much of a headache Tess had until after her surgery. She was a completely different dog. I foolishly attributed her deminishing depth perception, cloudy eye, and general laziness to aging.

You may need to move some things around in your house to prevent injuries. Tess still clobbers the walls and chairs if she isn't paying attention, and she is getting to the point I need to invest in a ramp for the 4Runner. She can still get in most of the time on her own, but has more trouble at night or in dim light.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns during Storm's recovery. Since I have lived it, maybe I can help.

Thanks Jen - I tried to do a search on the topic but had the spelling wrong so didn't find anything. Storm is only 2 and has had a problem with the eye since birth - which is why she got the glaucoma so young. They are 99% sure she has never had vision in the eye that was removed so she has no worries with having to adapt to moving around the house etc. In fact she catches the smallest treats even when thrown from her no vision side! We didn't really explore the options of prosthesis or anything else and now im used to her having one eye and am not worried about it.

I know what you mean about the recovery - it is a difficult time but she is getting better by the day. I wish I could take her to work with me too! Luckily BF & I work different shift at the moment so someone is always with her. Knowing someone has been there helps! Congrats on the clean bill of health!

Thanks so much,
Ang :)

Did your vet put Storm on any drops for the other eye? Tess gets one drop of pred acetate in each eye - every day for the rest of her life I assume. The goal is to keep the intraoccular pressure down in the lower end of normal range to prevent her good eye from getting glaucoma. It's been a year and a half since the surgery and doc is quite pleased. She said she has done many of these surgeries over the years - apparantly not as uncommon as one might think, though I found very little information on the subject when I tried researching on the web - she has only had one dog that rejected the tiny silicone implant and had to have it removed.

I'm very glad Storm is doing well. It is so hard to watch them go thru all that and not have a magic wand to make it all better for them.

Sorry for the delayed reply Jen. I have done some research with the results from the Lab tests and Storm had Secondary Glaucoma which is caused by some kind of trauma to the eye (presumed in our case to be from birth).

Primary Glaucoma can effect the other eye but Secondary is very unlikley. Her other (well only!) eye has normal pressure and will be watched but she is not on any medication.

Major set-back....

Well after many check ups and being told "in 3 more days the stiches will come out" more times than I can count, Storm finally got her stiches out last week. Her wound was still weeping and not very good but the vet thought the stitches might be causing problems.

Today she went back and we were told she has to have surgery again tomorrow!! I am so upset that we have to go through the same process all over again. Poor Stormy has just got back to her normal self and now it is more stiches, cone back on - not to mention another surgery. I just can't believe it! The vet said something is going on behind her eyelid and they need to open it to clean it out and get it sorted.

I also have the financial pressure coming on as so far it has been nearly $2000 which has put a little strain on the purse strings. Money isn't really the issue but the stress of it isn't helping.

Also we were going home for Christmas and now I don't know if it would be a good idea to take her away with us - and i'm NOT leaving without her! Which means we may miss the first Christmas that our family will be all together in over 10 years! I'm distraught about it all!

More healing vibes for Storm would be great guys. She's so great and doesn't deserve all of this!
