D had a strange episode this evening, involving some gagging, licking the air and walking around licking and eating everything he could find on the floors and furniture (specks of dirt, cat hairs, carpet fibers etc). We thought something was stuck in his throat, so we opened his mouth and I stuck my fingers down there to see if I could feel something.. but there was nothing. We rubbed his throat... that didn't help either. He seemed otherwise normal while he was doing all this licking... trying to play with the other dogs, and he even let me know he had to go outside. I let him out and he immediately started to devour grass.

I called the vet and they said this sounded like common stomach upset. I've never seen this though. The actual vet got on the phone and said he was licking and eating everything in attempt to help settle the stomach or induce vomiting. He said this is usually caused by acid build up, or it may possibly be a reaction to something he had eaten. We're not sure what it is because he did get into some kibble that had been spilled on the floor about 20 minutes before the episode. The kibble is a brand that my boyfriend feeds his dogs, not the puppy food D usually eats (Solid Gold Puppy). But as far as we know he does not have grain or other food allergies. Anyway, by the time I hung up with the vet he had settled down a little and was starting to take a nap, but I was told to give him half a tablet of Pepcid anyway. He ate it like it was a treat and went back to sleep.

He slept for a little while (45 minutes).. with really bad gas, lol, looking a bit uncomfortable. I could hear his tummy grumbling and he got the hiccups. He kept moving around trying to get comfortable. He'd also curl his lips up a bit like he was in pain. Now he's awake and is back outside eating grass again. The vet said to let him graze a little.

Has anyone else experienced this? What was the outcome? I will call another vet for a second opinion if he doesn't go back to normal soon. My poor little guy.

ours will sometimes insist on eating grass...and then eventually vomit. this is typically accompanied by the 'gurgly' stomach issue and gas. sounds like an upset stomach, but i agree if it continues much longer it should probably be checked out!

^ Yep. Pacey will do the same thing on occasion. Usually after she eats enough grass, she'll throw up and then seem to feel better. This is also sometimes accompanied with rather unpleasant bowel repercussions as well...

We have a laundry list of treats to not give her anymore since they seem to cause this.
