Still waiting for a baby!

Hello everyone, I'm very new to Boxerworld so thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Ally and I live in Chester (which is about 25 miles from Liverpool) in England.
My beautiful boxer Holly had to be put to sleep on New Years day which was a bit of a shock as she hadn't been ill. To make it worse I was out of the country (with work) so wasn't even with her at the end.
Anyway on a cheerier note we have decided to adopt a rescue dog this time but don't know how long we will have to wait until one becomes available.
I have always had a boxer in the home and was brought up with them as a child. I think they are the best breed of dog ever and would never swap to any other.
At least by reading all the messages it makes me feel a little bit closer to being a boxer mummy (or mommy as alot of you say!).
I have two young children to keep me busy and help pass the days until our family is made complete once again.
I'll let you know as soon as we hear anything on the adoption front. Bye xx ps) what are these 'crates' that I have seen mentioned? Is it the same as a basket (dog bed)?

Hi there and welcome!

Sorry to hear about your boxer but I am glad you rescuing one.

A crate (nicer name than cage) is a place to put your boxer when you train him, or when you go out and a place to sleep at night. They come in different sizes. I bought mine the biggest I could get and then made it smaller by putting a box in it. I hear they also come with dividers. You only need enough room for them to lie down and turn around, so that they don't do their business in the crate. Most dogs won't dirty where they sleep.

Re mommy and mummy, My mom and dad are from UK and they all say mummy, I'm told here that a mummy in found in a tomb in Egypt?? I have learned to say Mommy.:p When my mom asks for chips she gets potato chips in a bag not french fries.

I love the british "mummy" though, being Chicano (Mexican-American) I'll often use mami (pronounced mamee) and mommy.


As far as crates, they are really helpful with house training and if you ever have to leave your puppy alone. I just got my puppy a little over a month ago, and can't imagine being without him. Good luck with getting a pup soon!

crates

These crates sound like a good idea and as far as I know they are not used over here. Couldn't imagine any of my past boxers liking them though although I suppose if they have used them as a pup then they are used to it.
Whenever we used to go out we would close all the bedroom doors but let our dogs roam the house. Our last boxer used to sleep on the couch most of the time and never did any damage. However I can remember coming home numerous times to a complete mess with one of my old boxers. He was able to open the freezer and kitchen cupboards and help himself to a snack. I once noticed an awful smell in our bedroom and discovered a pack of thawed out tripe under our bed. Not sure how long it had been there but I knew who was responsible! Maybe my dogs are having it too good!

Hi Ally, welcome to the board.

I'm too so sorry you lost Holly, it must have been heartbreaking not to have been with her at the end. I hope you are successful in finding a rescue and look forward to hearing how you go on.

On the crate side, I'd never seen one until we got Monty, but our breeder always uses them for her dogs. I just simply prayed that Monty would be good as my tiny cottage just hasn't any room for one. Fortunately he's wonderful at being left alone ( although I know from his sad face he doesn't like it). He's never chewed up anything and simply sleeps until I get back. I do however make sure he's had a good run before hand though.:D

I have a photo of Sergeant in his crate that I would like to send to you, he really likes to go into it for a quiet period, we have it in the main area where we are nearly all of the time. He has his toys in there, sometimes there are so many toys that there is not enough room for him :D

hi ally i live in warrington which isnt that far from you. i have 2 boxers and when i had the first one we had him in a crate for a while (they r called cages over here, they sell them in argos) but he hated it and managed to bend the metal bars in it, i dont know how, i think he might have been in touch with uri gellar . but he totally destroyed our house when we left him. he didnt chew anything he ripped things down, like the back of my brand new pvc front door, my central heating pipes, curtains, curtain poles i could go on and on. since we got the other one he has been fine apatr from he or should i say they have figured out how to open the kitchen cupboards so i have had to buy child locks so they dont eat me out of house and home. look forward to hearing from you.

sorry forgot to say we tried for ages to get a rescue dog but it was really hard to get the woman to come out to do the house check she was always busy! then the ones we were interested in had to be kept by her for so long for some reason. there are a few boxer rescue centres in our area and u can view some of the dogs they have on the web, if u type in boxer rescue and search it will bring the sites up. goodluck
