Hi everyone,
My Roxy is 8 months old and still going in the house. I reward her when she is does her business outside with a piece of cheese or peanut butter. I started traing at Petsmart and the trainer told me not to say "no" to her when I find her going and to just clean it up with a enyzme cleaner but not let her see you do it and to not pay her any attention to her at the time, to ignore her. So when she goes outside make the biggest deal that she went and praise and give her treat, which I do. And it is not like she even hides to do it, she does it right in front of me and knows she did wrong because she gives me that look and then runs away. I take her out every 1 1/2 to 2 hours and the trainer said she should be able to hold it longer then that. I don't know what else to do-HELP, any suggestions? Could she have bladder trouble?

My Lucy was the same way actually she finally stopped doing it a couple of months ago and she 14 months now. It was very frustrating. Just hang in there she will get it. You may want to take her to the vet if you think it may be a urinary tract infection. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I talked to the trainer again and told her she still is doing her business in the house and she asked when she was doing it and I told her at night. She said take her out and then put her in her crate till she whines to go out take her out. I haven't tried it yet because I am just starting to have success with the whole rewards thing, giving her cheese, she loves it. She sisn't to fond of her dog treats when I take her out, she wants the cheese. She hasn't gone in the house so far. Now when I take her out she looks at me after she goes so she can get her treat.

does she go when you are sleeping? or just in the evening. if it is in the evening then maybe you can try and put her leash on and make her go every where you go. this way you can see when she starts to sniff or what ever her habit is. this way you can take her out and praise her.

it sounds as if your trainer is a bit confused. i believe that IF you catch your dog in the act of relieving itself inside the house, you should say "no" in order to let it know that it is doing something that it shouldn't and to get it to stop at that moment, and give you time to get them outside and let them finish what their doing. then after they finsh they get the treat. telling them "no" or even yelling after the act does not let them no that they have done something wrong. in fact it would only stress them out for no reason.
also, you mentioned that he suggests placing your dog in his crate until he whines and cries to be let out. that doesn't make sense to me either. it might add confusion as to why the dog is whining. would it be whining to be let out to go potty or to just get out of his crate? since you did not mention if your dog is giving you problems with being in their crate, i'm only going on whatr you had posted. imo, it seems as if his suggestions go against all other crate training methods i've read and used. i would suggest placing your dog on a potty training schedule and keep a log of when and how often she goes. that way you will be able to tell if she is increasing the amount of time that she goes. the important thing to potty training is consistency and patience.

I agree with apollosdad, if you see your dog relieve himself in the house you should let him know that you don't approve. I've caught Oscar in mid act picked him up and ran him outside to finish. We tell him "No-No" everytime he goes in the house, and praise him like crazy when he goes outside. This gives the dog a more definitive idea as to what you want him to do.
