Hi Coll, I purchased one of these a few years ago thinking it would be good for on the beach so the dogs could hear over the sound of the waves. I tried it at home and it seemed to work just fine.

The problem I had was that I could not really hear it so was not convinced totally about it's effectivness  The whistle has been in a drawer ever since  Sould play with it again one day.

More than a few people who play in the hunting sports (retrieving etc) use them.

I'm sure they are just fine really smashicon

I use one but adjust the pitch so that I can also hear it. I think it is a psychological thing - you think that if you cannot hear it then it cannot be working.

I have two dogs and they will both come to the same sound, so two whistles or altering pitch is not necessary.

Alternatively, you could use a gundog whistle - they are very effective.

Whatever you choose make sure that once you have found the pitch that your dogs respond to you lock that pitch in (with superglue if necessary!).

That is me, if I can't hear the sound it does not exist

How did you adjust the pitch? Got mine out of the drawer and can't see a way to do this. Mind you, I am hopeless at anything slightly technical, my husband could probably work it out..

Ideas much appreciated :)

With our dog whistle you adjust the pitch by twisting it.

Supposedly, you start with the whistle pitched all the way "up" then pick a time when your pupper is relaxing/dozing and blow the whistle while slowly twisting the outer tube - when his ears perk up, you've hit the pitch he'll respond to best.

I used the whistle with my chihuahua many years ago but haven't used it (or seen it...) in ages. It was quite handy as it always made him bark which made it easier to find him in tall (8") grass... :p

Colly, I have some friends that have used one of those whistles with their Boxer Scully since she was young. They do a lot of camping so its important she comes back! Scully never fails to return with the whistle, it works really great for them.
