Cooper Update

We went to the Neuro Dr yesterday and after he introduced himself he put up the spinal x-ray and said "OUCH" of course my heart stopped and I said "WHAT?"
He told me the Spondolosys is something they are born with, Cooper has had this all his life he said, but there is something that has caused the change and the pain. He said it is more of a "Soft Tissue" issue in the spine and that it is causing compression on the nerve roots.....because you can not see soft tissues in an x-ray or MRI he is requesting a Mylogram where they shoot die into the spine and watch it flow through the spinal canal.
He believes it is a bulging disc causing the problems but he really does not want to say exactly til he does the Mylogram...$1200 I might add.
He gave Cooper some steroids (prednisone) to take for the next 9 days and he said if he acts like a new dog in a few days then he will know and that it will also confirm his thoughts of the spinal issues, he said if Cooper does not feel any better in the next 9 days that it has to be something else. Also while they do the Mylogram they take a sample of spinal fluid to test and make sure it is nothing major as well.
If the Dr does find a bulging or even a herniated disc while doing the mylogram he wants to go straight to surgery.
So for right now I am waiting to see if the steroids are going to kick in and we will go from there.

Again.....so if this is a genetic/hereditary thing why dont breeders test for this like they test for hips.

I was always wondering why my Boxer baby NEVER kidney beaned like all of the other boxers do......this could have been a red flag for me about 7 yrs ago. If I would have had a spinal x-ray back when he was a baby it would have shown Spondolodsys.

gotta run guys, I am at work and have to go to lunch!!
I will catch up with you later on today

Wow Kodie ~ that conversation you had with the vet sounds so familiar about Cooper having been born with this problem. Also I used to wonder why Bart never kidney beaned too and he would NEVER jump up into the boot of the car....we thought he just enjoyed being lifted...particularly as he would go out into the field & jump over 3ft + horse jumps at will! How do you ever stand a chance with Boxers, eh?

Anway we'd like to add some positive vibes for Cooper & wish him well. Lets hope he starts to feel better soon. Be sure to give him some more gentle hugs from us.

When I got home last night it was SO great!! There was Cooper at the door to greet me!! He has not done this in awhile, half the time he would not even know I came home. His tail is going at Mach 3 speed now, his ears have perked up and he is more alert. He trotted outside and I can tell he feels SO much better it is just amazing.
I did not even have to pry him out of bed this morning to take his meds and eat breakfast........there he stood all ready!!
So based on what I have seen in the last 24 hrs on the prednisone I am going to continue with having the mylogram done here REAL soon hopefully with in the next week.

Thanks for all the boxer loves and well wishes, it means a lot to us!!

I will keep you guys posted.

That's so great to hear!

You know, this makes me think a little. Gretchen, my other boxer, never wants to get in and out of the car on her own. Please tell me I don't have TWO with it! Ugh! (she is only 2 or 2.5).

Great news that Cooper is feeling happy again! How lovely to have him greet you at the door & ready to get up next morning. I can't wait for the day Bart does that again ~ he is still staying in bed as long as he can, doesn't come to the door to greet me when I get home.

Still waiting to hear from the 'Specialists' for a suggested course of action - hope to get something by the end of the week. I'm going to talk to the vet about Cooper's reaction to the Prednisone & see what he says about trying Bart with that as he's been taking the Metacam since last Wednesday & has shown no sign of improvement. But I think there may be a problem because of the Hypothyroisim.....

Be back in touch soon.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the support and replies....
We can not keep Cooper on the prednisone for very long only the 9 days he gave us to "test" and see if it helped.
I have noticed that the longer he is on it the more aggressive he get's (YIKES) He almost took my hand off while feeding treats....it's only with food though. The Vet said that they can eat twice as much while on the steroids, no wonder why he has been vacuuming the floor. I have been feeding him smaller amounts but 3 times a day right now to help him keep food in his tummy and that has worked for both of us.
We are going to do the mylogram in the next week to see what that will turn up.
I am SO scared though!! but yet I will not deny him a healthy life.

I will keep you all posted.
