Can I join your private group? My 4 year old girl was diagnosed today. I am so upset. I feel like I can't let her be herself ever again. They told me she has "severe" spondalosis, but I didn't know what to ask at the time. I will ask if surgery is needed and what the extent of it is. Do you walk your dogs or let them play with other dogs ever?

Markus had spondylosis. He was diagnosed at 6 years of age and he lived until 11 1/2.

Thank you, Jan, for your message ~ that's exactly the sort of thing I'm sure we've all been wanting to hear. Some reassurance that dogs with this awful disease can live long & happy lives.

Having done lots of research on the internet it seems that keeping a dog mobile is one of the most important things so after initally keeping Bart in and making him rest we are now going on daily walks. Nothing too strenuous, particularly as we don't know if we have his thryroid levels right yet. Bart is back at the vets on Friday for a blood test so I will have the opportunity to ask lots of questions (isn't it typical when you are hit with the news at the vets you just don't know what to ask!). I'll be happy to share what my vet has to say & I'll post a message back here after our visit.

The only way I can see that we can set up a group, so that we can share experiences along the way is for us to e-mail each other privately. Usually if you click on a user name you can send a private message, but I think you have to set this facility up in your user profile? If anyone has any other ideas please let us know.

Talk to you all soon, Kate

I'm not sure if this board will let us, but we could always have a weekly spondylosis thread. Say every Friday someone start the thread with a post like "this thread shares thoughts and tips on coping with babies with spondylosis" or something like that. But, again, I'm not sure if this board goes for that. I don't seem to have access to private message even when I set that in my profile. Gotta look into that a little more. And, I don't think we can share our private e-mail addresses on this forum -- otherwise, I would be happy to share it.

Hi Kate,Sorry that you got the dreaded knews about Bart. It really sucks. Dozer is just 26 months. We had to take him back in to the vet the other day, this time we saw Dr.Doug, who we usually see and I asked him lots of questions. I'm hoping that Dozer will be like Jan's Markus, and live to be a very dignified-ok maybe not dignified-probably wicked ornery :)-senior guy. The vet told us that the worst thing we could do was to restrict his activities, let him play but just to keep an eye on him.He loves to play rough with Bownser and Cissy,so,no more jumping on each other,or high jumps which he loves to do. We found out that he has 2 completely bridged vertebrae just at the base of his neck, with 3 more close behind, not completely bridged yet.
We are going to dicsuss stretching exercises when he goes back in 2 weeks for bloodwork and the possibility of hydro therapy. Found a place here that specializes in canine arthritis problems so dh and I are going to check them out over the weekend.

We aren't able to pm each other. That has been disabled, but we can all stay in touch here through posting.

Take care of Bart and yourself,we'll all get through this,we have the world's greatest support system here :)

Hi everyone
I have sent a message to BW asking about private messaging so we'll see what is suggested, otherwise I like your idea, Amy, about a weekly thread.....

Sticky thread

Has anyone considered going to the Forum Request and requesting a sticky thread forum on spondylosis to be placed in the Dog health issues and questions? I considered this myself, but felt it wasn't my place to do this since my dog isn't affected. There are others here who have also gone through this and can offer so much more information on treatments and what to expect.

Just got back from the vet. Still no further forward really as today Bart should have had a blood test to measure his thyroid levels but because I found something that looked like a dissolved tablet in his water bowl we could not be sure if he had taken all of his medication today...the monkey!!

Anyway he's booked in again for Tuesday. As my regular vet is on paternity leave we saw a different vet today. He took a look at the x-rays and said he had never seen spondylosis so severe in a dog aged 3 years before. Interestingly he thinks there may be a link between congenital Hypothyroidism & Spondylosis....anyone ever heard that? Also as the Spondylosis is so severe the vet thinks Bart was born with the problem for it to have progressed so far. IF the cause is Hypothyroidism then it would seem reasonable that once the thyroid is stabilised the Spondylosis should not get any worse.....

Will post more news, hopefully, after Tuesday.

Best wishes from Bart & I to all his fellow sufferers!
