Sat am Junior snapped off half of one of his back toenails. Clean cut through almost as if it had been cut. But, it was very very far back, way past the quick. It was also one of the black ones which he is very sensitive with if you try to make the tiniest trim.
He was unattended to for about 15 minutes when we found blood all over the place in the living room & hallway. But he was kidney beanning fine thus adding to the blood splattering; he let me wash the paw and touch the nail no problem. It stopped bleeding on its own. What could have caused this to happen?

Our Minnie did this to one of her toenails while playing with the neighbor dogs. It was split like a banana peel into three pieces.

We cleaned it and stopped the bleeding with stiptic powder. After a couple days of healing my wife appkied some stuff she uses on her nails called "hard as nails". We hoped this would help the nail heal/harden faster.

A couple days after that Minnie reinjured the nail. This time it was really bad...no hope of saving the bulk of it. We ended up having to cut it off, well past the quick. :( Minnie was a real trooper about it though, and was walking normally soon after the trimming. The nail has grown back nicely now, you can't tell there was ever a problem.

Good luck trying to get the nail to heal. If your pooch is anything like our Minnie you'll have a hard time keeping him still long enough for the nail to heal all the way. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Tyson split one of his nails in half pretty bad. I kept on eye on it and made him wear a sock for a few days so he would not lick it. I also filed it down as much as I could. Now it is all healed and growing back very nicely. :)
