Our pup has a pink/black nose. It is mostly black. Someone pointed it out and said I had better put some sun screen on it as he could get skin cancer the same as humans.

Is this true? If so, can I put the same kind we use on him or is there a special kind for animals?

I did look to see if anyone had ever asked the question before but only found ?s about blotches and bumps.

Don't waste your Money

You don't need to put sunscreen on your Dog's Nose. If skin cancer was a problem in Dogs, believe me someone would market sunscreen especially made for Dogs. Skin cancer caught early is easy to treat. If your dog gets skin cancer, especially right on his nose, you will notice it right away!! I would not put any of those chemicals on my dogs nose!! A dogs nose is the most important sense they have. Why would you want to but that nasty smelling sunscreen on his nose. It would almost me equivalent to putting blinders on a human.

Actually, I feel quite the opposite. Dogs can in fact get skin cancer, and also sunburn the same as humans. I also don't believe the statement that skin cancer caught early is easy to treat so you really don't need to worry about it. Skin cancer can be undetectable at onset, especially under fur, and can spread very quickly! White dogs in particular are at risk, but all dogs, especially those with little hair need to be protected. Sunscreen on ears, nose, tops of feet, and neck is essential for preventing sunburn. They do make sunscreen for dogs, but regular human sunscreen/sunblock will work just fine.

Betsy is right - I will definately use a sunblock on Buttons IF we ever get any sun in Scotland that is!

We always made sure Biff was in the shade as much as possible when we got the odd sunny day here in summer too
