My one piece of advice is make sure your Vet sends some pain killers home with your wee girl. Not all vets do this so you'll probably need to check.

No human lady would ever have this surgery without pain killers so why should our fur ladies have to.

Thanks for all of the advice. I am going to look into the laser surgery, for piece of mind. I appreciate all the help!

What about weight gain after spaying? Both of my parents' dogs (mixed breed small dogs) got so FAT after they were fixed - they have these tiny heads and HUGE bodies. I know my mom feeds them too much and I think I can keep from doing that, but I'm still worried about having a bowling ball instead of a boxer. :)

If your Mom's dogs are fat, it is because they are fed too much and don't get enough exercise ;) It would be the same whether they were spayed or not.

Keeping a dog at the correct weight isn't rocket science. LOL - if they're gaining too much weight, give them more exercise and feed them less. If only it were so easy for ourselves, hmmm? Fortunately for dogs (or at least for their waistlines), nature did not see fit to provide them with the ability to open the fridge ;)

Here's a link to an article on weight gain post-spaying: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1625&articleid=909

Thanks so much for the info. I tried to tell my mom that hers were big because she feeds them too much, but........ She has such a big heart and can't stand to see an animal that is skinny. I had to stop her from feeding Sally hot dogs while we were over there last weekend. :)

Hi
I have always had my girls speyed before the first season. All I can say is - yes, it is a big op but Boxer s just bounce back like yoyos. Your only concern will be in keeping her quiet. My very first girl when brought home, raced up the stairs and lept onto the bed - I nearly had a heart attack. She did a sort of sharp intake when she lept but she was fine. It is hard to keep them quiet but you will get through it. It isnt so easy when you have multiple dog households. We found in the house with the other dogs they were okay - just dont exercise or potty them altogether outside at the same time. Send them out to potty seperately.

Do you know I was sitting here thinking did I have painkillers after my hysterectomy [spey!!!!] - I cant even remember. Know I was up the next day walking about tho.......

Hi
Forgot to say - we get ours done at 7 months. Didnt realise you could get them done earlier. 12 weeks is really young, wonder is that the laser surgery. Of course surgery advances and all that - things just get better and quicker all the time.

What is ACE?

Weight gain - has your mom had her Boxer checked out by the vet? Is she purely overweight, some of our Boxers can suffer from thyroid problems - maybe worth getting it checked out......
