My mom had Roxy done at 7 months. She had the normal surgery and a dewclaw that was improperly done, removed. It cost her close to $500.00 (but thats cdn$).

I guess jersey is just expensive, including blood work, brooke's spay cost me 600 (her ears only cost me 400 I donno)

Man I can't believe what it costs to spay in some areas of the country. My friend had his done through a humane society office and paid about $60. I have checked with a local vet that the breeder recommended. She did the dew claws, first shots, and tail docking. She is very pro-spaying if you don't intend for pups in the future. One local vet said he would not touch her until she was at least 6 months old. Having one dog already die of mammary cancer anything i can do to prevent my new baby from suffering the same demise I will do. The breeder recommended vet said she would do it anytime after 4 months of age. And the price $115, they keep her all day, surgery is in the morning so the want to monitor her, and no ACE for a sedative she said specifically.

Price wise have you looked into a spay/neuter clinic? Something offered by a good mobile unit or the Humane Society in your area? I ask because I have a boy and even with an undescended testicle making the surgery longer it was only $100 to neuter him (a normal neuter was $75). A spay through them is only $90. Maybe talk to a reputable rescue in your area and ask what clinic they take their Boxer rescues to for a better rate?

Personally we had the regular scalpal method done, laser was not an option. He had dissolving stitches and had no issues. Oh and there was no bloodwork, even my regular vet doesn't do bloodwork on an otherwise healthy dog.

Also I had my boy neutered at 6 months. Personally, for us, that timeline wouldn't change boy or girl.

A mobile unit is a good option if necessary but honestly, if money isn't really an issue, I would suggest a regular vet clinic. My reasoning is is because the mobile clinics are very fast paced. Our local animal welfare has a partnership with a mobile clinic (a very reputable one at that) that I have volunteered on several times. Our vet is very thorough and does her job well but there is definitely a focus on speed. I schedule all the surgeries and we do at least 70 surgeries in two days but it is usually closer to 90 in two days. On our mobile, there is the vet and two vet techs and then one or two volunteers. The volunteers do pretty much what the vet techs do. When I am on the mobile, I do the after surgery stuff of giving rabies and FVRCP vaccinations, treating ear mites, give fluids, etc. Then put the cat in a cage. All of this in a matter of minutes because the table needs to be cleared for the next cat coming out of surgery. The cat stays in the cage until it starts lifting its head and then it is sent to recovery where more volunteers just keep an eye on them.

Personally, I like to think animals get more one on one attention in an actual vet clinic. I don't know if that is true or not but at least I know they are better equipped in an actual vet clinic. On the mobile, the equipment is limited to what is needed for spays and neuters, space is very limited. We can alter puppies as long as they are 2-3 pounds and kittens that are only 2 pounds...TINY!

Don't get me wrong, I love mobile spay/neuter clinics and what they are able to do. I have nothing against them, especially for people who have no other option but I would rather spend more so that I have more assurance. We have never lost an animal on our mobile and hope we never do but it is always a possibility and if it happened, there would be less resources available to help.

With that said, I paid I think $250 for a traditional spay with heart monitoring (Abbie has an arrhythmia) and an IV for quick access in case of emergency. I also opted for the bloodwork.

Just got my litle girl spayed and it about about $450 at our vet. The method they did was the dissolving stiches underneath the skin and sutures to close the incision. I am a little concerned as she is definitely active already after only a day from having the surgery and I just don't want her to pull out the stitches before she has had time to heal. Reading on this post it appears that everyone so far has not had any issues?

Go read the response I just posted under the thread 'Recovery after spay', I've had problems because I wasn't careful enough with her. Don't want anyone to have to go through that too.

We had both our girls done at around 4mths and they did fine with it and are happy healthy girls now. We had conflicting reports from our vet and breeder but he (vet) didn't push us. In fact, he went into his office and wrote down a whole host of sites for us to visit (some promoting early, some promoting later and some saying don't spay at all) so we could make an informed decision. Wish I had kept that list, was great. So 4mths worked for us.

We didn't have the option of laser but did opt for the pre-op bloodwork (apparently it took 4 staff to hold our teeny tiny Kilby still enough to draw blood ). Both had external sutures that had to be removed around 10 days and internal disolvables. Neither licked their wounds or had any trouble... dozy for about 6-8hrs then right back into it.

I think we paid about $600 (Australian).

Most of the people I know have been taking their pets to the humane society in my area. They charge around 40 dollars for boys and 60 dollars for girls.
I've been told multiple times that the humane society is actually the best place to get it done. They have done the procedure a billion times, while a lot of vets perform it only half a dozen times at most a year. It could depend on the area, but they mandate the blood work and are supposed to be extremely clean.
I guess I've just talked to too many people that have taken their puppy to the local humane society and wouldn't even consider going anywhere else myself, because even most of my family members with pets prefer taking their dog to the humane society for this operation and also for putting in a microchip.
I was actually under the impression most people these days take their dogs into the humane society for both spaying/neaturing and microshipping instead of their vet. I was even reading that some places that are doing the microchip only work with certain readers, compared to the ones at the local humane society are registered with the state and use standard equipment, so vet can easily scan. I'm getting a little bit off topic I know..... but I guess I just never even considered anything else except humane society for both spaying and putting a microchip in my girl.

Well Roxy is 4 months old with red mange, I'm waiting until the mange completely clears up, but I also want to get her spayed. As you posted, I've heard so much about before or after her first heat that there doesn't seem to be an agreement.

It seems that before you can help prevent some cancers and it seems that health wise some believe after her first heat is better as my vet believes this and if she has puppy vaginitis, which my puppy may have, then I hear it's better for her to go through one cycle.
I've never had a dog in heat before, but isn't it one month of her wearing diapers? I'd prefer to do what's best for my puppy, but I can see doing it before that it would be much easier on me.
