Spaying???

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of spaying? Lulu is almost 5 months and I am thinking of having her spayed around 6 months. I don't want puppies, but I want to know healthwise, are there any benefits to having them spayed..Thanks

Yes, there are benefits to health. The most commonly quoted statistic relates to malignant breast cancer - the risk of which rises substantially with heat cycles. Secondarily, spaying eliminates the risk of pyometra (a potentially fatal infection of the uterus, which is a risk following each heat cycle also). Our first dog wasn't spayed (we knew no better) and got pyometra. We were lucky not to lose her so I would seriously advise having a dog spayed, I'm sure the pros far outweigh the cons.

Laila is just turning 7 months on the 13, she has a date to be spayed on the 20th...It will feel like one of my kids going for surgery!!! Barbara
