Hi All -

Just looking for some input on spaying our female Boxer at age 5 months versus waiting until she is 6 months old. Vet recommended 6 months old to spay.

In anyone's opinion would it be too early? Thank you.

Six months is a typical age, but one month earlier than that should not be a problem at all if you puppy is healthy. Many shelters are starting to do spay/neuters on much younger puppies to ensure that it gets done before the puppies are adopted. There don't appear to be any adverse effects, according to the studies I've read (and one even showed faster recovery times for young pups.) If 5 months is a convenient time for you, go for it!

Spaying at 5 months

My baby was spayed three days shy of 4 months. I personally thought that it was too early but the vet assured me that earlier was better. She did just great, a little sore the first 24 hours and wouldn't eat or drink, I think she was giving us a huge guilt trip, but other then that she has done great. She is now 8 1/2 months old and weighs 55.9 lbs. ;)

My Cassius was spayed at 5 months also and we didn't have a problem with her. My vet told me her preferred to do bigger dogs earlier for some reason.

I've mentioned this before, but we had Emma spayed at 12 weeks. We had it done at a clinic and they said she'd need less anesthesia and would recover faster. Boy, were they right. She was back to trying to be herself 6-7 hours after she came home. I'm glad I did it early.
