Hi,
I have been told by my breeder my pup will be spayed this monday.
She will be 12 weeks old.
Now she is coming py plane and its about a 2 hour flight.
The breeder has told me once the vet gives the thumbs up she will be coming.
She will let me know after the surg.
I am just curious from you....how long do you think we might have to wait.
I have been told that the stitches are self dissolving.
we obviously do not want to rush anything .....I guess we are all so excited
Thanks

I'm a little shocked that the breeder will be spaying her at 12weeks! That is to young in my opinion. Most vets and breeders suggest to wait until 6 months. Why is she spaying her?

As for spaying alot of rescues and shelters spay at 8wks before they allow the pups to be adopted. That way they don't have to worry about hearing of those accidental pregnancies and have more puppies coming into the shelters.

I would guess that her breeder will probably want to hold on to her for a couple of days after her surgery, just to be sure she's recovering well and all the effects of the anasthetic are gone before putting her on an aeroplane. If there are no problems, she should be OK to travel by then. Obviously, if she does have any ill-effects from the surgery, then it would be a bit longer before she heads your way.

spay

I have read that infact it does not do any harm whatsoever having puppies spayed this early. MOST shelters if not all do it..
Now beyond this point...I am figuring that she should be ok to travel by friday for sure...dont you?

Providing she has no serious ill-effects post-surgery (which can happen with any surgery btw, irrespective of the age of the pup), then yes, I would anticipate she'd be ready to be on her way by Friday :)

in agreement

I agree...anything could go wrong...with any surg.
The benefits of doing it young...from wat i read is that the pups bounce back a lot faster and less anasthesia must be used.
I too always assumed that the dog must be at least 6 months old....but have learned otherwise
Thanks for the advice....lets hope she can come on friday...as that will be my kids day off school and it will be great for the entire family to go to the airpost the pick up their new 'sister"
Thnks

Wow

I'm shocked as well But new to all this, I have been told a dog should be at least 6 months and up to a year :(...I will pray for the little thing and hope the recovery is fast, so the sweet little thing can be in your arms soon:) Good Luck hugs and kiss's from Sadie & Holly

thanks

Once she is home we ALL cannot wait to smother her with kisses.
I am hoping this week and next will fly by so that we can finally have her in our arms....well at 13 weeks she might just be too big for our arms...but she will definatley have lots of kisses...from me ..hubbie and 3 kids...poor thing will feel overwhelmed with all this love

varying opinions

I'm sure there is stats to back up both sides of the arguement but my vet, who has 2 boxers, said that spaying that early can cause development problems. At least with males, and this is gross, if it's much earlier than 5-6 months, their sheaths may not develop properly. He has a boxer client right now that wsa neutered at 8 weeks and he's now 8 months and they have to manually put his...part...back into the sheath everyday. Konah was done just over 2 weeks ago when he was just over 5 months.

I'm not sure which is better, early or later, and i can honestly understand why shelter's do it that young before adoption but I haven't heard of a breeder doing it that young before.

I'm sure she'll be healthy and just fine. I'm very excited for you! I can remember waiting to bring home Konah...i could hardly sleep at night. When he came i would go and check on him in his crate like every 1/2 hour. *L*

Have fun when she does come! They are such a blast.
