Sophie's Heart is Failing

I'm so upset right now - I really need some support from you all. We took Sophie to the vet today for her routine vaccination and knew as soon as the vet started to listen to her heart that something was wrong. She has developed an irregular heart beat , the vet was so taken aback that her pulse was so strong but her heart beat so irregular that he had to get a second opinion from his colleague. We were stunned as she has been her usually self, no excess panting, no coughing, no fainting, nothing out the ordinary. Bottom line is her heart is most likely degenerating due to her age (she is 11) and the reality is that she could leave us at any time. She is starting on a drug called Vetmedin with another check up next week. Has anybody used this drug before under similar circumstances and with what results etc?

I'm trying very hard to keep calm as my own baby is due in April and trying to accept the fact that we have had Sophie for 9 wonderful years, given her a happy life and that I just need to love her every minute that we have her with us - but it's not easy.....

I'm sorry to hear she's not doing well :( 11 or not - it's not easier.

I guess there's no chance he was listening to her heart just after her shot, not before?

Another thought - just possibly it might be worth asking your vet if he thinks it worthwhile to refer her to a specialist. The Queen Mother Hospital for animals just north of London has some of Europe's best cardiac specialists on staff. Having a senior boxer baby myself, (don't even LIKE the word) I know it's not easy. You just wait for something to go wrong. Hopefully Sophie's heart will do better with the meds. ((hugs)) to both of you.
