SOOOOO confused about shots!

I know there is a lot of information out there about vaccinations, but last night we were approched by a couple that was so incredibly anti-vaccinations that it really shook my confidence. Our puppy is going in Friday for her 2nd round of shots (something like 5 shots...or maybe more) and I am really freaked out about vaccinating her for things that really don't matter. I know the Lyme vaccination isn't a huge issue for us, but what does a puppy really need in this 9-10 week range of shots? Our vet seems pretty standard and I'm sure he will have the average shots all lined up waiting for us. Can someone tell me the pro's and con's of vaccinations and some idea of what is really necessary?

Vaccinations

I believe in the initial puppy vaccinations. Just as you would vaccinate a human child to help pump up their immunity system, I believe you should do it for a puppy. But once they reach adulthood, I am in favor of every 3 year vaccinations versus yearlies.

I agree with Christina.

The SERIES of puppy vaccines are very important & the 1 year boosters.
After that, the recommendations are showing every 3 years. Many vets have not *adopted* this protocol yet. Many states or cities have not started reconzing the 3-year rabies vaccine either.

If you are doing the every 3 year protocol on vaccines, your dog still need to go in for a yearly check-up.

My vet does a shot series starting at 6 weeks, 9, 12, and 16. At the 16 week set of shots a rabies is done then. After the first rabies is done the next year they do one more and then every 3 years. I think you can have a titer (sp.) test run to see how its immunities are building but I have never done those tests, I have always just done a yearly vaccine and have had no problems.

Maybe someone here can tell you about Titer (sp).

If you do a search here you'll find there are lots of opinions on vaccinations.

My first 3 Boxers were fully vaccinated. As I learned more my ideas changed...my next Boxer only received 1 set of puppy shots. By the time I received my 5th Boxer I had researched more...the 5th puppy received just a distemper and parvo shot at around 12 wks and nothing else. She received her rabies shot at just over a year old.

After doing a ton of research we have switched our babies (cat included) to a three year titer protocol with yearly (If not more, I'm a little paranoid LOL) check ups. My vet agreed with this and actually had a flyer concerning it. I was impressed as I had printed out a books worth of info in case he disagreed. Dr Schultz from U of Wisconsin has done the latest research. I think you can find it at IVIS.com but I think Julie actually pointed me to the links. I have a question in regards to the shots and showing. I know when attending shows that they want you to have shot records with you but I also know that many breeders/show persons may do their own shots so is there any bearing in what shots need to be done and record proof for show reasons?

Dog shows do not require shot records. Counties usually require current Rabies and if you travel over the border I know that is required also.

Where did you hear dog shows require shot records?
