SOOOO confused....

I am so confused. I read A LOT of posts here on BW about what food to feed my puppy and decided on the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice...not puppy, not large breed and not large breed puppy. I read that boxers weren't large breed dogs and therefore should not be fed large breed food. Today when I took my 10 week old boxer puppy in for her shots the vet said that she should be fed large breed puppy for the first year and then large breed adult after that. I was also told to stay away from treats that have wheat flour in them. Somebody please help...I think I may go nuts in all this confusion. Thanks in advance!

There are tons of posts on here about feeding. My two do great on Wellness which is an all stages food. Just do a search - you'll find tons of information.

How attached are you to your vet? Boxers are very much a medium sized breed. I might consider a vet who knows that. Provided the Nutro you are feeding has enough protien for a pup (something I know nothing about--except that it should be more than you feed an adult dog), you have made a fine choice. If it makes you feel any better, I was feeding Tae Chicken Soup for a little while and my vet had never heard of it!

Not all vets are informed on every aspect of nutrition. Also, how well do you know your vet and how long have you been with him/her? You will find much more information on here than you will get from a casual comment made by a vet while he gives the puppy shots.

I honestly trust the people here on BW as far as feeding goes more than I trust my vet about feeding. Honestly most vets really dont' know that much about nutrition as it's not something really taught in vet school compared to the medical stuff. Most vets don't know much about it unless they study it themselves and learn outside of vet school. I have fed my puppy (16 mos now) and my four year old the same food since i brought him home at 8 weeks. First they were on Canidae (all life stages) and then when it came out, Chicken soup (adult variety). I have had very good success with both. My "puppy" is now four inches larger than my female and starting to fill out nicely. I think you honestly would probably do better doing the research on here for your dog food and perhaps investing in the Whole Dog Journal. It provides informatin on nutrition as well and lists of the best foods (by ingredient list) .

I just wanted to say thank you for all your help...i kind of took the comment in stride because of all the research I had done on BW before going to the appointment. I plan on keeping her on her current food. I'm in the process of locating a store that carries the wellness or chicken soup. I would love to have her try them to see how she likes them. Thanks again for helping...

I just had my pup to the vet yesterday and we talked about food. She told me that during times of growth spurts (our next one is at 4-6 months), that a boxer puppy should most definately be on a large breed puppy food or an all stages food. She did note that the boxer is a medium breed, but at this time the boxer pup is growing so fast that the large breed dog food will slow down the process slightly and allow their muscles to develope with her bones. Not only can a puppy develope deformaties if the muscles do not develope at a similar rate as the bones, but if nothing else a large breed food would lesson the pains during stages of growth spurts for puppies. She said that largers boxer pups should particularly be watchful. I've been using this vet for many years and she seems to really care and know what she is talking about.
