The other day we were up the poconos, a couple people were out on the porch with Maggie and my husband and I were inside. I heard my sister in law scream "Oh my god" and we went running out to see what happened. My puppy was laying at the bottom of the steps very limp. They said that she was going up the steps and when she reached the top step, about 6 steps, she just tumbled backwords to the ground, and didn't move. When we first say her of course we freaked out. At first look she looked as though she broke her leg, but when I got to her whole body was limp. Her mouth and tongue turned completely white, and her eyes were very dazed looking. What do you think happened? Did she knock herself out? A few moments later she was totally fine, thank God!! It was a very scary experience for all of us.

It sounds as if maybe your puppy had an epileptic seizure. She might also have just lost her balance and fallen down the steps but, if she was unconscious, I'd get her to the vet as soon as possible. I was told that, when the tongue and lips turn pale or white, it's a sign of shock. Best of luck with Maggie and please let us know how she's doing.

I was always told that if the gums and tongue were white there is dehydration going on. I know when horses have white gums, it is NOT a good thing. A seizure, the dog will (I am going to spell this wrong) con-valise (shake) and when they come out if it their body is not limp. It could have been a number of things. How long did it take for her to 'get with it' again? How was her balance? She could have just smacked the back of her head really hard. Can dogs have concushions (sp)? That may have caused the discoloring. What did the vet say?

That is a scarey thing to have happen to your pup. If it were me I would definatley be wanting to get my pup checked for possible heart problems - aortic stenosis (can cause weakness, fainting or even sudden death) and dilated cardiomyopathy (signs include depression, coughing, execise intolerance, weakness, respiratory distress, decreased appetite and even fainting - sudden death can occur). Both are heart defects which are, sadly, all too common in our beloved breed. If your pup has either of these problems it would be best to find out ASAP so that you can begin looking at treatments or surgical options now - later might be too late for your pup.

Poor Maggie - it does sound like a seizure or fainting spell

I'd be inclined to have her checked over ASAP. When Ruben was around 8 weeks old he had four fainting spells over a week or so - of course we rushed him to the vet immeadiately every time - but we could not find anything 'wrong' (even though both parents were fully heart tested clear but we did not rule out heart problems). To cut a very long story short he had Hypoglycemia ( http://www.petinformationcenter.com/puppies/puppyhypoglycemia.htm ), caused by nibbling on toadstools (even though we fully superivse pups when they are out and about we missed this the first time but saw him the second

)His was a true faint, he went completely limp, white gums and tounge, terrifying for us.

Thanks for all the responses. It has been 5 days since this scary episode, and she has been perfectly normal since. I think she must have knocked herself silly somehow. She had been walking along the edge of the porch a lot, when we arrived at our place in the Poconos, and it was he first time there. maybe she fell (about a four foot drop) and was woozy. I saw here fall backwards down the steps after our sister in law screamed, and she was definitely out of it for a little bit.

But now, we really don't have any concerns about the incidents, except we really don't know what happened. I will mention it to the vet though.

Definitely watch her and have her checked thoroughly.

Last summer our Shannon had at least 2 "spells" where she would just fall over (like her legs gave way). It would only last a second or two and she was right back up and going again.

In December she had a seizure in the middle of the night. Although we rushed her to the emergency clinic, there was nothing that could be done.

We had to have her put down. The vet suspects she had a brain tumor.

Please take this seriously and have her checked out.

That must have been scary ,cassie is 8wks and has tumbled down 4 or 5 stairs twice now but I never thought of her being knocked out ,I'll have to watch her closely for that .Hope your pup is ok.

My Girl Greta is 11 almost 12, and has had 2 of these episodes in the last 2 weeks. She had the latest last night during our evening walk. She collapsed and went stiff, she had labored breathing and then Stopped breathing!
I thought for sure we had lost her, but she snapped out of it after a few secounds and got up, a bit shaky but her normal self! The whole incident lasted about 1 1/2 minutes but it felt like forever to me! We are on our way to the vet as soon as I get done with this post. I an hoping that it is just the heat but fear the worst. I will let you all know what the Vet said.

Well I have just returned from the vets

Greta does have a slightly irregular heart rythem, but the Dr. doesn't seem to think that is the cause. He fears she may have a cancer and has drawn blood to do further testing. The results won't be in until friday.

In the mean time she has to take phenobarb to help prevent further siezures. I can only pray that the Dr. is wrong and it's just the irregular heartbeat causing it.

I will keep you all informed. Any of you who have Boxer's or any other dog who has had a similer episode...
GET THEM TO THE VETS ASAP!
