My boxer is one of the most picky eaters I have ever seen. He hates dry food. We have given him both Canidae and Merrick and he wont eat either unless it is "dressed up". Honestly, I am getting tired of adding a little yogurt or parmasean cheese to his food. I also tried the tough love approach and just left his food on the floor until he decides he is hungry enough to eat it. Needless to say, he won that battle. After 2 days I gave in and dressed it up.

He loves canned food but I also do not want to get into that habbit full time due to the costs. I do occassionally mix some dry and canned together but would like to be able to pour the food in his bowl and watch him eat when he is hungry rather than watch him starve until he gets a condiment added.

Can anyone recommend a good soft-moist food? I think this may help my problem. Thank you in advance

Have you looked at Innova EVO? My girl, who can be picky, loves anything from EVO-wet, kibble, treats, she loves it. Might be worth a try but I will warn you it can be a little pricey. Good luck

My Cassius is the same way, very picky. Started on Orijen, but because he is only 5 mos switched due to high protein content. Tried Merrick, Natural Balance, etc, but all has to be dressed up. Fortunately, I only have to add about 1.5 - 2 tablespoons, so a large can lasts a couple days. I would try Canidae or Timberwolf, but I cannot get them here and I am not willing to pay the astronimcal shipping costs to and within Canada. Good luck

Is Innova EVO a softer, moist food?

Will wetting it with water make him think it's had something added to it? I know there are some foods that aren't good to wet (I think the ones preserved with citric acid, but I may be wrong on that) but that would make it softer. Just a thought...

I read somewhere here that our boxers shouldn't eat plain dry kibble alone...I switch and sometimes mix Timberwolf and Merrick...I add a little warm water to it and the Merrick actually makes a little gravy...I also add a tablespoon or two of wet canned food by Merrick and a can will last about two days (Laila still eats 3 times a day)...she absolutely devours her meals...she can hardly wait for me to get it ready...hope this helps...Barbara

Giving in and dressing up his food is only making him pickier. He knows if he holds out, you will give in and give him something better. As far as putting the food down until her gets hungry enough, you already found out that didn't work. Put the food down, give him 20 minutes to eat it, if he doesn't, pick it back up until the next meal time. Soon he will learn that the food is only available a certain period of time and if he doesn't eat then, he'll have to wait.

They make kibble and wet food. The kibble is kibble, but very palatable-they seem to like the taste. Like I said my girl will take it over a treat. The poster who said you can create fussy eaters is corect though-if you do not want to get in homecooked, wet food, etc. then you need to just wait for him to eat-he will eventually. I have always supplemented with home cooked so that is not an issue for me. I know lots of dogs who eat thier kibble and that is that, but I like to add organ meats, etc. My boy, in particular had a alot of trouble with his coat and was not healthy in general as a pup (BYB) so I started to supplement based on a nutrutionist's advice, and in my case it made a huge difference. It really is up to the individual. Good luck!
