My 4.5 month old pup, Bea, ingested a tampon last night. She took it from the bathroom garbage can and when my husband noticed and tried to get it away from her she just gulped it down. I called the vet this morning and got an appointment in a few hours...he said this could cause an obstruction. She seems fine - eating and pooping and playing around - but I am so worried about her - not to mention mortified! I can't imagine a more embarrassing thing for her to eat - gross! I know from doing a brief search that I am not the first person this has happened to so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the vet will do? If it has caused an obstruction how will they remove it?

ROFL! Sorry.

Hopefully your vet will be able to induce her to vomit it up. If that doesn't work, there is a good chance that she will simply pass it. But *if* it causes an obstruction, then your vet will probably try an endoscope to remove it and if that's unsuccessful then you're probably looking at surgical removal.

Is it a good time to suggest flushing them? Or alternatively securely wrapping in plastic and placement into a tightly-lidded bin. Dogs are notoriously attracted to the darndest and most embarrassing things.

Life's embarrassing moments...we all have them. How many times have we had something negative or embarrassing happen to us, and later, after a certain amount of time, we can look back and have a little chuckle about the incident - I'm sure you will too. Hope Bea is able to pass it without intervention ~ Cathy

I'm sure she'll be fine and I agree, hopefully one day you'll laugh about this!

They do eat the most embarrassing and disgusting things. Read my current post about Daisy's ordeal with the full kitty litter boxers! :o

My old dog used to LOVE used maxi pads. My Mom and I had to wrap them up and stuff them in the kitchen garbage. EWWWWWWW.

phew!

Well I just took Bea for a little walk and sure enough she passed the tampon. I've never been so happy to see something so disgusting happen! LOL. Anyway, thank you for your nice replies. Now that I know she's okay it is pretty funny. Glad it's over - although I'm sure she'll provide me with more embarassment in her lifetime. I will be getting a nice new tightly lidded trash can for the bathroom but who knows what she'll get into next!

Embarrassing, well maybe

OK so maybe it was a little embarrassing, but Mother Nature is always playing some sick joke on us poor females. I'm glad to hear of the "passing" and I hope your baby is OK. My Cashew went for the other brand of feminine protection, LOL, got home from work, hubby forgot to close the bathroon door, IMAGINE the mess, I'm just glad I arrived home ALONE and before anyone else. LOLOLOL. :);):);)

Embarrassing moments are SO much funnier after you know things are ok aren't they!! I am just rolling laughing!!

Might I also suggest baby locks on the cabinets? the kind that go on the inside and you have to barely open the cabinet and push the tab down to unlock it? I keep telling myself I will buy some to keep Adam out of the kitchen trash, but i always forget--- i better remember cuz my daughter is turning 13 --- um- it could be my house next ?!?!?! LOL
