ehayes21; Thanks for the article, am reading it now :)

gmacleod; Thanks for your reply...yeah I'm very lucky to be able to have her with me so much. In terms of ending playtime - that's a good point. I do TRY to call her to me a lot for basically no reason (other than training) and then congratulate her and jump around/play with her, but she normally just rushes away again hehe. Thanks for your help :)

Kat; That's so funny! I was wondering how you and Bruce are doing...it seems our pups really could be littermates!!!! Wish we could get them together - if you're ever down in the South island let me know!!! My life revolves around Sasha too...especially having her with me at work - no more lunch meetings or appointments unless I can get my colleagues to puppy sit! The only thing I do without her is my big runs/bike rides...and even then I usually pick her up towards the end and do a slow run beside her for the last few mins down to the beach. Does Bruce bark much? Sasha is so quiet...the only noise she makes regually is her funny whiney-squeak as she yawns when she wakes up. That and the ear flopping noise, hehe! How's Bruce with water? Do you take him to the beach? Would love to see some photos of him....wonder how close Sasha and Bruce are in size, being only a day apart!

RunningOra, our Pacey is exactly as you describe your dog. She has been such a pleasant surprise to be so well behaved and so quickly and easily trained that it's almost weird to us as well.

Her only problem is that she gets so excited around other dogs and humans, but we're working on that.

We're not complaining though.

Don't be too freaked out about the teen thing. Like I said in my previous post Abbey did get to a rebellious phase, but all we really had to do was change our approach a little.

The random chewing I think was just because she was bored, so we just tried to make sure she didn't get bored.

When she would stop listening we would buckle down on our training again.

With recall we really worked on this during this age and so we would just call her for no reason all the time just to have her come over and get pets, or treats, or whatever. Now she is really good with recall, I don't think it even crosses her mind we might be calling her to get her to stop doing something undesireable.

Even though she did start getting a little rebellious, this was also the time that she really seemed to bond with us. Not that we ever felt like she wasn't bonded to us, but now even more than ever I get the feeling that she is trying to please us. She wants to do what I'm asking her to do.

You just have to watch them and adjust your training methods. You'll probably start to notice that they want to defend the home a little more. Abbey used to just wiggle without hesitation if someone came over, but when she got older I started to notice a little more caution of strangers. Although she never made noise as a puppy, now she loves to bark at stuff out the window. I just try to remember that her behavior/personality isn't 100% fixed and it will change, or I guess grow, as she gets older so any time I see a new behavior from her I just step back and decide how I can adjust my training techniques to either encourage or discourage the behavior.

It is all wonderful and rewarding it is just a leaning experience for you and them!

Rocky went through a destructive phase somewhere around a year and a half but thankfully it was brief! In a couple of weeks time he shredded a pillow, chewed on my coffee table, chewed up two sets of blinds, a window sill, door frame, several hardback books and I don't remember what else. This behavior was always exhibited while i was at work and I always go home for lunch so it was rare he would go more than 4 hours by himself. I think he was just throwing a kind of tantrum but like I said, he outgrew it quickly and now I have no worries when leaving him home alone. I agree that with your situation and being able to spend that much time with her, you may skip this type of thing all together. Good luck but even if she rebels a little, you'll survive with just a few bruises and scratches ;)

Thanks everyone for your feedback...really great to hear about your experiences. Great photo with the pillow all torn up, haha!

Abbeyroad - thank you for your reassurance!

You are SO lucky to be able to have Sasha with you at work, although I'm sure you know that!! lol

I've put quite a lot of the training I used to do on hold, although I suspect Bruce is an excuse rather than a reason for the most part...now that I know my son is fine with supervising him and taking care of him etc I can probably get back to the pool and some other classes I've elected not to go to lately. No more excuses, it's time to get paddle fit!! We haven't been down to the surf beach lately, there's a tidal estuary much closer so we've been down there quite a bit, he's perfectly happy splashing around in the water there so I'll probably progress to a flat-to-small wave day at the Mount and I'm sure he'll do fine there too. What about Sasha? I suppose she's got sea water in her blood with al the time you'd be spending down there?!

Hmmm, about the barking - Bruce is a very quiet boy in general. He barks at the vaccuum cleaner and ...oranges (yes, like the fruit) - I'm not sure where the citrus fixation came from, lmao! He makes those hilarious Chewbacca noises at the cat, makes it hard to put on my growly voice and say "leave her alone Bruce' because I'm cracking up laughing

I must get some updated pics up, he's grown so fast - he had a play date with his sister yesterday, about 4 weeks ago therey were the same size, now he's overtaken her on the growth stakes, and the difference in the size of their paws is unreal!!!

Oh so Bruce likes water? Sasha is a little freaked out by it, at times...sometimes I can get her to go in and play with me but she is so funny, even if she just gets her paws wet, she shakes her whole body as if she's soaking, hehe! She LOVES playing in the sand though, and with seaweed...sounds like you do a lot of water associated sports? Swimming, surfing, paddling? Waka ama? My mum's over in rarotonga for the waka ama comp at the moment.

Hehe Sasha started barking at the vacuum the other day, and she also does the Chewbacca noises at the cat on occasion! But she is very quiet too.

Would LOVE to see some pics of Bruce! I swear Sasha is growing overnight at the moment!!! Let me know if you put some up!

^^^heya, well as you can see I updated my avatar, seeing that cute wee puppy photo was making me miss having a cute wee puppy!!! Bruce looks almost all grown up now, except in miniature! He was 11.2kg at 15 weeks, how much does Sasha weigh?

I went to upload some pics last night but got waylaid between updating **************** and here, and only ended up doing FB so have a look on there! -First name Katrina, last name Thomas, my pic has me holding Bruce (!!) so you'll know it's me :) you'll need to hook up as a friend first as I don't think my profile allows just anyone to get in and view...gotta be safe about these things (says me who's just posted my surname, hahahaha).

I swim train to stay surf fit but I don't paddle waka ama or waka anything else, apart from the occasional reccie in a kayak. Your mum sounds like a legend! I am a complete kook, just for the record, didn't catch my first wave 'til I was 37 but I make up for lack of skill with lots of enthusiasm, LMAO
