First, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I am so sad. We went to obedience yesterday and i mentioned that i was having problems with Konah not listening, biting and barking to get attention. We'd pet him and if it wasn't enough, he looks you in the eye kinda scarily then growls and barks and starts nipping.

After they asked me some questions and observed that while Konah heels nicely, his halts are bad and he completely ignores who ever is walking him. Apparently (since he's worse with me than my bf) i spoil him too much and he now thinks he's my equal. Which i can understand. The problem comes in that i'm not supposed to pet him AT ALL for a week. Verbal praise only, and only when he deserves it. I'm so sad though. I love giving him mush mush kisses and hugs and pats.

It's working though because i wasn't petting him after the class last night and i didn't give him our "night night" kiss and he cocked his head and gave me his "Mom, where's my kiss?" look. then he started growling and barking at my bf. I don't know if i'm doing the right thing. I have no idea how i'm going to last a week. What do you guys think about this approach? I trust our trainer implicitly, she's fantatsic and verything so far has been wonderful, this is the first time i've ever felt unsure....

Your trainer is absolutely right. Your pup must earn everything. Once Konah learn his place in the pack, you can give him more kisses.

I agree with Jan. You have to establish that you are the one in charge. We have a "nothing in life is free" policy at our house -- Dieter doesn't get anything -- no pets, no kisses, no lovin', not even his regular dinner -- unless he works for it (has to obey a command first). When we go out, he sits at the door, we go through first, and he stays there until we release him.

We've had stops and starts, because when they give you that "where's my kisses, ma?" look, your heart melts. But, consistency is key and Konah will be happier knowing who is in control and that he can count on you for guidance, support and protection.

Good luck, and keep working on it!

It's official then. I'm a bad mom. I don't know why i didn't see it before, i know i'm more lenient with him but i thought i was doing well by him. I mean his temperment is great, he loves everyone, doesn't bite on anyone but my bf and I, his jumping is sort of bad, and he was amazing with the small kids he was introduced too. This next week and onwards is going to be tough. I'm so used to snuggling on the couch and giving kisses and pets for no reason.

Doh. Oh well, i just have to tell myself, we'll get through it and he'll be better for it in the end.

Here's six more days and counting....
