I broke down and bought Sally a crate yesterday and last night was her first night in it. She whined a little but seemed to do okay. Poor baby had to stay in it a good bit today - we had ballet class and were gone from 2:00 to about 6:00, then we went to eat (and had car trouble on the way) and were gone from about 6:45 to 9:00. She whined and cried something awful both times - I had enticed her in with a treat and a toy. Anyway, she spent the whole time after we got home curled up on the couch with my hubby and me. We both got up to do something while she was asleep and when I got done I went looking for her - lo and behold she was curled up asleep in her crate! She went in all by herself! YAY!!!

I'm so happy for you! We also purchased a crate a few days after getting Maya. She has been sleeping in it every night since (about 6 days now). Two days ago, I broke down and bought her a big pet bed from Costco, which is really just an oversized pillow with a sheep skin-type of material on one side. It cradles her when she lays on it and for the last two nights she has slept the whole night. Hooray!!

We now use crates and they work great... the dogs go into the crates without protest whenever we leave the house.

For our first two dogs we didn't use crates because we thougth they were cruel. Most of our furniture and carpet was damaged beyond repair. Also, chewed wires!... and one time we left chocolates wrapped as christmas gifts on the table... all that was left of them when we came home was wrapping paper and dog vomit!

To make a long story short, ( I know it's to late ), the crates have made our home and dogs happier, healthier and most importantly safer!

That is awesome! Way to go Sally! appicon I got lucky with Charlie Paper because he came to me already crate trained. You should be very proud of your little lady.

I could only be so lucky

Diva does really well in her crate at night (because we have it in our bedroom). She NEVER wants to get in - treats, toys etc will not lure her in. Once we get her in at night, she is completely fine as long as one of us is in there with her.
During the day is a different story - When I am leaving for work in the morning, I put her in her crate and all she does is whine and cry!!!!
When we are home, she gets the run of the house, and her crate is always open so she has the option to go in if she wants, and NEVER does!!

Bailey is the first dog I've ever crate-trained and its awesome. I tried putting her in the kitchen at first and came home to pee and poop smeared everywhere! It was quite a task cleaning it up on my lunch hour. Now all I have to do is get a treat out and she runs in there before I even get there. Once she's old enough I'll let her have the run of the house, but for now it gives Roxy a little break from the terror of a puppy.

I went home for lunch and hubby says that the few times he's left her alone for more than a couple minutes she's gone into her crate. Keep your fingers crossed that it lasts!

While we can buy crates here if you know where to look, I don't know of anyone who uses them in the house-just the ones to secure the animals in the back of the car. We have taken to using the kitchen at night for both Cinda and Zak. He would kick up such a fuss if he was on his own so Cinda is a good teacher albeit passively so. We've learned by our mistakes to keep some things out of reach (wires, food etc) and the kitchen is easy to clean. Only one mistake on the floor and we're fine. Pup sleeps through the night with Cinda on her big dog-bed and has chew toys next to him in case he gets the urge through the night. I guess it's a case of making do to fit the situation. I'd hate to buy such an expensive thing as a crate just to have it sit and not be used. Before we used the kitchen we left them in the lounge and Zak didn't settle. He'd continue playing until we got tired of the thumps and bumps as things hit the ground. So the kitchen is our crate.
