Boxer Pal
A few months ago, we took our limping dog to the vet (he started limping after playing ball in the park)-the vet said slight HD. So for the past few months we had her on glucosamine-now she improved, but would have bad days and never completely healed. Now yesterday she was turning the corner in our kitchen, let out a huge yelp and the same leg was up in the air-we rushed her to the vet-now is says tear in acl-and a chipped fracture, we need to call a surgeon on Monday!!! First does it seem weird one time HD another time ACL, second does anyone know costs of surgery for ACL? We want to get this done as soon as possible, she is in sooo much pain and has not moved since yesterday, just lays there!!!-But at the same time, we are concerned about what it really is-how is the acl diagnosed (she had an x-ray)-and if we get the surgery, will the torn acl just come back??? Sorry for all the questions!!

Got a real good place for you to ask your questions.....
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/orthodogs/
Everyone there is in the same boat you are (I was too at one time) with dogs being diagnosed with ACL injuries, having surgeries, trying to rest and "wait".
If she does, indeed, have a completely torn ACL - it cannot regenerate, she will need surgery to replace it. It's possible......that she has some HD as well, but I'll bet it was a ruptured CL all along that finally tore all the way.
You should take her to a board certified orthopedic vet and have an exam. Usually, they are sedated, xrayed and the vet looks for the "drawer sign" which shows the cruciate is gone or injured and the joint is slipping.
But, the fastest way to educate yourself is to visit Orthodogs, read the archives and the links and ask lots of questions of the sympathetic and experienced people there.
Mack and I feel for you :-( Oh.....Mack had what is called "Traditional" surgery on his first leg and it was $1600 - the other leg had TPLO 6 months later and was $3200. But we are in a very expensive part of California.....probably pay more for this kind of stuff than most other parts of the country.

Boxer Insane
My Dallas had two problems with his knee - first was luxating patella and then before we got him into surgery, he also ruptured his ligament. Diagnosis was a comination of x-rays and the vet manipulating his knee while he was sedated. (Most boxers will have to be sedated to relax enough for the vet to manipulate the joint to determine if a rupture has occurred.) Price for surgery will vary depending on where you are. I paid about $1000 for Dallas.

Definitely make sure that you have a definite diagnosis -- you can always get a second opinion if you aren't comfortable, and I would also suggest seeing an orthopedic specialist for accurate diagnosis and treatment/surgery recommendations. Try to get it fixed as soon as possible -- the longer it is left untreated, the higher the chances of early arthritis setting in. My boy is only 3 and has arthritis because his knee was left untreated before I got him.

Boxer Booster
just had it done last week

my dog maggie (12 yr old cocker spaniel) just had this surgery last week. We just had the wrap and stitches out 2 days ago and the vet told us not to be surprised if she doesn't walk on it for another 2 weeks. He also told us that she should be back to new in about 6 months. Ours cost 550.00 but I would have paid whatever to help her feel better.

Hope your baby is feeling better soon!!!!
