So mad at neighbors! Thora exposed to Parvo!

So as if I havn't already been enough of a paranoid mom... I now have this hovering over my head.
Thora is now about 10 1/2 weeks old. She had her first round of shots at 8 weeks (the day after we brought her home) and we've been restricting her to our house and the house's of close friends and family where she can be confined and dogs are vaccinated. So yesterday I'm outside in our yard with her waiting for her to do her business, when my neighbor comes out back with a pitbull puppy. We share a 4 foot adjoining steel bar fence so the pups ran towards each other and immediately started sniffing and greeting each other through the fence. So I immediately got up and scooped up Thora and started asking the neighbor, who I already don't like, about the new pup. He goes, "Her name is Arora and she's 12 weeks old, and she just got over PARVO. But don't worry, she's all better now." PARVO! I freaked! So here's my baby girl sniffing and licking a Parvo recovering pup, who very well may still have traces of the virus in her. I promptly brought her inside and put up some plywood against the fence to keep them from contact, but now I'm freaking out because I'm afraid she could have contracted it from that brief encounter.

I called the vet this morning and I'm waiting to hear back from her to see if she has any advice. I know to look for loose, stinky stools, vomiting, lameness, and no eating or drinking. She was only exposed to the puppy last night, so it could be days yet before she shows symptoms, if at all. I'm so scared! I don't know how long a dog that's had Parvo can carry it to infect other dogs/puppies, and I also don't know how long ago the puppy had it or how long she's been recovered. I didn't think to ask until afterwards and haven't seen them since. Our neighbors are super sketchy and there's always strange people coming in and out, so I don't even know if the puppy lives there now or if it belongs to one of the friends or what have you.

OMG!! :eek: I hope she doesn't get it. IF she does, at least you will be watching for signs and be able to catch it very quickly. Prognosis is better the sooner it's treated.

I'm going to be such a wreck until I know she's ok. I seriously want to strangle them! I read that the majority of the virus is shed in the stool within a few days of recovery, so I just hope to god she's at least a couple weeks recovered. I haven't seen them to ask.

I'm really sorry you have to be worried for a couple days. I'm a paranoid mommy too so I understand. You just have to be positive and be on the look out for signs. As for your neighbor, I really don't think it's "his/her" fault. It's not like the pup was at a dog park or something like that. Zara had parvo and after a couple weeks the vet gave the ok for her to be around other dogs. It's a sucky situation but it happens, the parvo survior is still a friendly puppy and wants to say hi to your pup.

I don't have any experience with parvo, but I really hope Thora doesn't get it. I would be freaking out just like you. I would be soo mad at your neighbors.

I did a quick search on line and came across an informative page from a vet clinic. Canine Parvovirus It states that a dog is contagious for three weeks from time of infection, but it can stay in an enviroment for 6 months. Since the infection can transferred from sniffing where the infected stool was, I would steer clear of that neighbor's yard. I would talk to the neighbor to find out how long it is been since the onset for her pup. Sending lots of healthy parvo-free ((vibes)) to Thora!

I just missed the vet's call, but she left a message. She said that the majority of cells are shed within the first sign of infection up until the last sign and then a few days after, so hopefully that pup has been clear long enough that Thora won't get it. She said the incubation time on average is about a week, give or take. So it could be a while until we see any symptoms if she has it. And yes I did read that the virus itself is very hardy and can last for a very long time in the environment. Thora will never be in that yard, I assure you. For now, I have plywood up along the fence, and we'll be closely monitoring her outside and put her on a leash if the other puppy is out.

@ Roge- Only a small percentage of puppies actually acquire immunity with their first vaccination, which is why vets always give boosters. My fingers are crossed that Thora is in that small percentage but I realize that it is unlikely.

Ugh- this just sucks. There's absolutely nothing I can do but worry until something does or doesn't happen :(

I also think that young immature puppies with underdeveloped immune systems are most at risk.

I'm very happy to hear that your girl is a survivor, you must have been very thankful. I am not angry with the puppy of course- she's adorable and very sweet as far as I can tell. But if my dog had a disease as deadly as Parvo, I would make it a priority to notify my neighbors before there was ANY contact among dogs. I realize this guy probably doesn't understand the harm that could be done because as far as he's concerned, his dog is well. His vet should have properly explained to him the dangers of exposing his dog to other dogs, ESPECIALLY young puppies. Ugh. I am so upset. I was going to sign Thora up for puppy kindergarten but now I have to wait because I don't want to risk the chance of infecting other puppies if she did in fact contract the virus.

Why!? Why why why? Haven't we been through enough? :(
