What do yall do when it's 90plus degrees outside to wear off some of your dogs energy. I try to work them on the flirt pole, but after 5minutes jada's touge is hanging out and pretty much touching the ground.

On really hot days when Cami just has to be outside (she was an outside dog in a previous life) LOL, I freeze a gallon milk jug with water, about 4 inches from the top and let her play with it under a tree. She is content to roll on it and bark and growl at it. This keeps her from running around and getting overly hot but it also allows her to burn up a little energy with some mental stimulation verses alot of physical activity. She can't understand why only a small amount of water comes out at a time though.....she hates waiting for the ice to melt!

Ponds!!

What we usually do is we have a dog park near us that has a pond and Lily goes swimming in it so she stays cool but gets plenty of exercise and she LOVES it!

You can purchase a cool vest that Jada can wear which will allow him to stay and excercise in the heat for longer. We haven't bought one yet but have heard fabulous things about them. There also is a cool neck wrap you can purchase which is a lot cheaper.

We exercise ours in the early morning, or early evening, after the sun has gone down. During prime time, it is just too hot to be out. Sidewalks and roads could burn their feet, and we don't want to be outside then, either :)

Question for you BW members..Heat?

Hi,

Paddy has had his first experience with heat this weekend, Being in the UK we havent really had much hot weather, However Paddy is really struggling,I have taken him out early to avoid the heat, but whilst he is playing you can see the heat gets to him..He;s panting all day long and not really eating. Plus hes not that keen about wading in water..We have a lovely brook but whilst he loves watching his furfriends get wet..he will not have any of it.:(
Whats the best advice on keeping him comfortable during the day/ I like the idea on the frozen jug..will try that :), But does anyone else have any top tips on keeping my baby happy in the hot weather?

Cooling vests?

LilygirlCO,

Where have you seen/heard of those cooling vests? It sounds like a good option for my little girl.

Where abouts in Colorado are you? My wife and I are down in Colorado Springs and we bring our puppy to the dog park about 1-2 times a week depending. That and she's only a week and a day older than your Boxer, perfect playmates! :)

I discovered the vests up in Boulder. Here's their website:

There are several different brands out there if you do a websearch. These are probably the cheapest (and a Colorado company).

I live in Westminster but I am in Colo. Springs every weekend. We usually hit the dog park at Bear Creek park but yesterday I picked up a book called Canine Colorado and it says there is an 18 acre dog park at Garden of the Gods which I think I will hit sometime soon! I'm positive Lily would love to meet!

Shazza36, I know exactly what you mean, we are having the same problem with Red. We even bought him a paddling pool yesterday because we thought he might use it to cool down, but he wouldnt go in it,he just kept barking and biting at it and ended up popping it !!!
He's not eating much either just drinking a lot. We have a large fan on a stand in the living room aimed at his bed and he seems quite happy with that on him (not panting anymore anyway)
We just make sure theres always plenty of shade in the garden for him and keep a bowl of water with ice cubes in it out there as well.

It's getting really hot here in the south too..I keep a sprinkler hooked up to the hose pipe and turn it on for them...Bubba just stands over it and Bella tries to eat it but it really does help in the heat..then they just lay under the trees or after they get cooled off they can sprint around the yard....and keep coming back for more...
