Snorting

Hi all,
Every now & then, Baxter will go thru this "snorting" noises which scares the kids & honestly it sounds frightening. I heard this is normal for boxers. Is it something they grow out of or is it normal?

Does he do it when he's over excited? and does it sound like he's trying to suck in air? Our Nikki used to do it, and our handlers said its basically cuz she will get too excited, that and that her nasal passages were smaller. (its normal) and when that happened, just put your fingers covering her nose "holes" and this should stop it right away. hope that helped!

ps. Nikki is now 10mos, and i haven't heard her do it for the past 3 months

Fairly normal for short-snouted dogs. Not to worry. Tell the kids it is ok and the dog is not in pain or anything. Just sort of like a sneeze!

Baxter just turned 6 months & there is no special time when he does it. But it's good to know that it's not dangerous.

My girl does this all the time. When she is excited, playing or doesn't get her way.

Guinness does the choking thing too...mostly when he wants something...like to get on the bed. Or when he's playing, excited etc...I was getting worried since he just started this too...

What a releif to hear that this is common! Cooper does this a lot (during play or not) and I can tell that it stops him in his tracks. He lowers his head a bit, starts snorting in and out really LOUD and then, it's over. It almost seems like he is gagging but never throws up or heaves. It used to really scare me! Once I described it to a vet and she called it a "reverse sneeze". A friend of mine has a pug that does it too.
