I cheat.I spritz the a/c filters with the oil concentrates I use for candle and soap making. My house always smells like a bakery although I haven't baked in months.
...don't ask about how it looks though.

I guess I am going to have to take the rest of the day off. Just reading about all of this housework has tired me out! lol!! Seriously though everybody does have some great cleaning tips!

Bedding gets washed twice a week at our house in HOT water and Arm and Hammer detergent, and dried in a HOT drier.

I vaccum at least three times a week.

I don't use the carpet powder, plug ins or anything like that. It just smells like a flowery dog to me. Plus, my sinuses can't take the strong scents.

I wash my linoleum down once a week with Mr Clean or Lysol.

I own a carpet shampooer and make sure that I hit ANY accidents immediately with that thing.

The dogs are NOT allowed on the furniture. My best friend's $2000 sectional has been totally destroyed by her two dogs. No thank you.

The curtains come down once every six months and get washed.

I dust weekly with pledge...none of that swiffer stuff to just move everything around on the furniture.

Plus, the warmer your house is, the more it will smell like dog. Try dropping it a few degrees...

Good Luck!

I also clean the bottom of my wall with a vinegar and water solution every week. I walk around, looking at the bottom of the wall and wipe off all the slung drool. Brody can sling a lot of drool in a weeks time. I also look for places on my carpet and spot clean them at the same time.

I got one of those air purifiers, its called a lampe berger and it burns oils, originally used in hospitals to purify the air and that really is awesome...not to mention the regular vacuuming, washing, etc...I am kind of a neat freek too, so that doesnt help, actually my 5 year old daughter is worse than my dogs can ever be.

That much carpet shampooing will wreck your carpet and soaks the pad underneath. It will not have an opportunity to dry out thoroughly and will hold odors. Get a dehumidifier if you want to shampoo your carpet that much. It will also help with the odor.

Carpet pad is probably the culprit - when you clean your carpets the water gets down into the pad and if the machine isn't powerful enough to pull up all the water (or there was too much water applied) it can stink - similiar to the smell of dog.

Also - check on top of door frames/window frames/cabinets/etc. I know when we do a "spring" cleaning every few months - there is always dog/cat hair up there.

Then you can check your central air system - the ducts need to be cleaned like once a year and also the filter should be changed more often (like every 30-60 days)

Then you can check drapes and have your upholstered furniture professionally cleaned (preferably with a dry-chemical process).

BUT - I am the same way about the smell. Every week we wash the bedding, clean out crates with disinfectant, vacuum thoroughly, spray all absorbant surfaces with febreeze, scrub the hard floors with natures miracle and/or vinegar solution.

Great advice.
We have 8 dogs and little smell but I wash their bedding weekly. We have hardwood floors. Area rugs and bedroom rugs are steam clean quarterly. Also high end airpurifiers on each floor.

I think carpets hold much of the smell in, we now have hard flooring pretty much everywhere and I don't smell the dogs or more importantly neither do my guests ;)
I wash their bedding once a week and today bathed both Lola & Zeb.
Most of the time it is their beds that smell which in turn makes them smell and vice versa. Fabrese is a god send too for the sofa's.

You get paranoid don't you about the house smelling dogified so you have to invite your rudest/most honest (whichever way you look at it ) friend over and ask them if they smell dog in your house.
