This topic bugs me!
I also have a Golden Retriever, we call him "Dumb Bo" his nick name. He's not as intelligent as my Boxer by far. And Goldens are supposed to be in the top 5.
My conclusion is this; certain breeds are Obedient smart like Goldens. Others Are Independent smart like Boxers. Which puts them in a different class.

We have a golden retriever too. This is so true!

There are other dogs besides Boxers???

Who knew? LOL!

Serously, though, all my babies have been so smart (some more than others, but don't tell Buster I said that) but also a bit of a challenge to train sometimes. But I think that has more to do with their incredible energy level as youngsters and their independent streak. It took some time to teach Buster the basics - I felt like he was looking at me like I was the goofball. "shake, Buster, shake" "why, mom? i'm quite busy and would rather find something more interesting to do, let's find a squeaky toy instead - hey, there goes the cat, what is she up to?"

My boxer is a straight "A" student

I have had several breeds of dogs and never one as smart as the boxer. At 13 weeks we decided not to take him to puppy school because he had learned his commands so well. He is smarter than any Lab I know (and a lot more fun)!

I think the problem is that some deem "stubborn" as "unintelligent"... when really it's quite the opposite where they have us worked! ;)

the issue is you have to be smarter than the boxer. With some people (as I have been told) "they" are hard to train... I said no, they are easily bored, and if you are not willing to invest time and effort, DON'T get one.

I'll never have another dog.

Seems like boxers have built up a reputation for being stubborn and in my book that also means intelligence because most of the time they want to do what they want and weigh their fun options more. I guess for other dogs its more fun to constantly wait for commands and be as responsive as possible to trigger preferable reactions from their owners.

The more time you spend with a boxer you realize how smart they are and like someone else mentioned, its really hard to even define intelligence anyways. So as long as your dog isnt running into walls headfirst and gets discouraged enough by a simple obstruction in his path to give up, your boxer is probably on par with that supposed top 10 intelligence list. =)

With that in mind........makes me wonder who is the intelligent one.....their dog or the owner? LOL If a dog will do what the owner wants and give them the reaction they want only to get a treat or love......who's the smartest one?

My little poodle is quite a cleaver little guy but he hasn't figured out how to unzip a huge couch cover and remove all the stuffing and look so innocent with stuffing all over his face when he gets caught. I bet Ms. Ali could teach him in a hurry given how many times she's done it and I'd say with her eyes closed at that!!

The smartest breed list is a joke! I have 2 boxers and both of them express feelings better than most humans can! :D I would like for one of these "smart breed judges" to come be a fly on the wall at my house for one week, even one day, and see if they still agree that boxers are not the smartest dogs on the planet!!

You cannot judge a dog simply based on how he reacts to a command... Dozer will listen to me most of the time, but if I tell him to sit on grass that is wet, or cold, he will just look at me like, "you gotta be kidding me". (I know most of you know the look I am referring to) I swear, it is hilarious! I can't get mad... I know I wouldn't sit my butt down on wet grass either! I would have to say the lab, or whatever dog it is, that actually listens to his owner and sits in that wet grass is the dumb one!

I could go on and on about the intelligence of boxers, but I know all of you already know how smart they are! ;)
