Our 4 1/2 month old brindle has recently been getting really bad sleepy boogers in her eyes, and or watery eyes. She never used to be that bad, but lately it seems that every time after we get her out of her crate, or she's taken a nap, there is a ton of matter coming out of her eyes. She was just at the vet 2 days ago and got a good bill of health, but I forgot to ask about the eyes. Does anyone know what could be causing this? We switched her food about a month ago (from NutroMax to Canidae)....could the food have anything to do with it? I read a long time ago that it may.....Any advice is greatly appreciated!

We've had this happen to our oldest boxer. She had the problem of entropion, where the eyelid on the bottom rolls under a bit. We did have it surgically corrected and it did help. BUT, it kept happening so through trial and error we finally figured out it was allergies. She cannot eat food with grain. She hardly ever has it happen now that she is on a grain free food. Just a couple of ideas to roll around. Good luck! ;)

Cassius just turned 5 mos and the same thing. Just recently has had a large amount of eye boogies. Cassius was also at the vet recently (yesterday actually) and the vet suggested switching to an allergy formula food. We are starting him on Natural Balance Fish and Potato allergy formula. Hope this helps :)

Bonny used to have similar problems with her eyes. We took her to the vet and it turned out to be mild Conjunctivitis. The vet said that boxer's are prone to it because of the way their eyes are set. The vet gave us some eye ointment but also mentioned that you could used the same ointment that humans can buy in the chemist as it was exactly the same thing but the one the vet gave us cost £9 and the one in the chemist cost £4!

Okay, interesting! Geez, now I'm freaking out that it's something medical! I really, really hope not! My thought was allergies too. Before we had a problem with her hacking and sneezing, etc and figured it was allergies....now that's mostly gone away, but we have the eye boogies now. I just find it ironic because Canidae is supposed to be one of the best foods, and it's either grain-free or grain is really low on the list (I can't remember) so I wouldn't think that'd be it....but who knows. We have to take her in to the vet again in about a month or so to get spayed, so maybe we'll just monitor it until then and ask the vet when we go in next.

Hey, Lucy, what ointment was that?

He suggested anything that you can buy that you would use on a Stye. So i guess something like 'Golden Eye'.

Bare in mind that this is only if your dog has mild conjuntivitis, if it was very bad the vet would probably use a course of anti-biotics.

As Bonny is prone to getting it mildy we just use it when her eyes get very bogiey and it clears it up straight away. I'd say we use it once every 1 1/2 months.

I'd be suspicious of food allergies as well. My dog got terrible boogie eyes at about 3-4 years old. I thought it was an infection too, but then after about a month of the eye problems, he started breaking out with skin hives and boils. After seeing a dermatologist, they suggested trying allergy food with no wheat or corn in it. That was the problem. He's done great since then.

The ointment we got from the vet for eye infections is called Vetropolycin, and contains the same ingredients as your basic antibiotic cream for humans. It's basically Bacitracin/Neosporin/Polysporin, and a 2oz tube costs about $10 vs. $2 generic human antibiotic/antibacterial/antifungal cream.
