skin problems

I have got a two year old Boxer who is going bald and I wondered whether anyone else has experienced this? He is not ill, he is eating and lively. He does not have fleas and is not scratching. He is moulting terribly but in about 6 or 7 places he is totally bald.
He does suffer from allergic reactions; certain things (especially bee/wasp stings) make his face swell up and covers him in lumps. He has to take anti-histamines. Could this be coonnected? I have changed bedding etc but nothing seems to make any difference. Advice gratefully received.:confused: :eek:

Have you taken him to the vet? Max had bald patches all over and it ended up as demodex.

Sounds like Mange to me - I would get him to the vet to be sure

You need to take him to the vet to have a skin scrapping done to find out if he has Demodex Mange.

He has an appoinment booked at the vets for tomorrow. Thanks for the advice though, might take my other dog as well just in case it is infectious - she is showing no signs of anything yet thank goodness!

:( Our baby boy has been to the vets but they don't know what is wrong from a simple check. He has got to go in on Friday and go under anasthetic so they can do a skin biopsy and other tests!:(

Maybe it is ringworm, both my boxers had it. Our vet treated it with antibiotics that are used for children with ringworm. I t seemed to work.

The vet should be able to do a simple skin scraping for mange and other parasites and blood work (full thyroid panel, etc.) without putting your dog under general aneasthesia.

If these tests come back inconclusive then an allergy test may be in order, which is also just a skin test.

Personally, I would ask him exactly what it is he intends to do while the dog is under and why it's necessary at this early stage of testing.

Maybe it is ringworm, both my boxers had it. Our vet treated it with antibiotics that are used for children with ringworm. I t seemed to work. One they took orally & one we had to put on the lesions.

Like others have said, you don't have to put a dog under to do a skin scrap. Tucker use to get one every 3 weeks when he was a puppy has has demodex mange...the vet can look for all the stages of mites through a simple scraping. I would ask why they want to put him/her under.
