Skin Infection

I took Riley to the vet because she was getting these bumps that seemed to be like scabs. She would scratch the bumps off and a clump of hair would fall off with it. The vet said it is a skin infection and put her on antibiotics. Has your dog ever had this? What could cause it? I'm just concerned because they are all on her head and she still seems to be scratching her head a lot after being on antibiotics since for 4 days.

...kind of sounds like bug bites to me but if your vet state its an infection then I'd stick with that diagnosis. Did your vet mention staph infection?
If your dog continues to scratch at them I would call the vet and ask about giving benedryl to stop the itch and let the healing begin. Good luck

Us too

We had noticed some hair loss on one of Grasie's paws and a scab on that same pad that wouldn't heal. We took her to the vet and he did skin scrapings to check for mange (that were negative) and told us she had a staph skin infection. She has been on antibiotics for a week and has improved. Good luck.

Hobart has the same thing! His vet said that the bumps are a secondary skin infection related to his environmental allergies that popped up in April. I got two weeks worth of antibiotics and after one week they are much much better. I'm doing multiple other things to help with his allergies so hopefully the skin infection will be a thing of the past once we're done with the antibiotics.

Thanks. The vet did mention that it might be a result of allergies and said we could try Travist-D along with the antibiotics. We thought we'd try the antibiotics alone because I'd rather not give her too much medicine. It seems to be getting better and there are no new bumps. I'm glad to hear that others have experienced the same thing and it's probably not a big deal.

Yes Lola had them last year, they got all infected too and we were back and forth to the vets. She too was put on antibiotics.
Lola had skin scrapes and finally they put her under for a biopsy. They said that after examining them and counting out mange etc that it was deep pyoderma ( a bacterial infection extends beneath and beyond the hair follicle) caused by allergies.
If they ever reoccur she has to go see a skin specialist *touch wood* they never do.
