Sick cat

Hi

My cat is 14 and has been sick a few times today. He wont eat anything at all. He is very quiet and just wants to sleep in his basket. He is a housecat.

How long should I leave him before taking him to the vet?

If it were me, I'd take him today. But, I probably tend to be on the paranoid side. You could always call your vet and describe the behavior and ask his/her opinion and then make your decision.

The vets are all shut as its nearly 9pm. If he is still the same I will call them in the morning.

I am managing to get some water into him now.

Call the vet as soon as they open and get him in asap or take him to an emergency vet. Cats are sedentary animals as seniors and can go down hill very quickly. It's good that you are getting him to drink water, maybe try some low sodium broth. Cats tend to mask illness before we able to notice it so it's good you will get him some medical attention.

The advice to get him to a vet is correct. Cats quickly suffer organ damage (can't remember if it's liver or kidney) if they go without eating for even short periods of time.

hi,

Just back from the vet. The vet thinks he has an infection in his system somewhere most probably related to his mouth. He has periodontal disease. His age is against him for having the teeth removed.

He has had 2 injections and we will start a 5 day course of antibiotics, we also have liquid cat food to feed him til he starts eating again.

The last resort is getting tests done to see if he is suitable for an op to get the teeth removed. Vets not too keen on this option as he is 15years old.

fingers crossed he picks up in the next few days.

My cat was PTS today after having seizures and not being aware of anything anymore. He was not eating or drinking and could not walk anymore. Its a sad day here today :(

I'm so sorry about your cat. I just saw this thread, and hoped he would be getting better. No wonder you are sad. You've had him for a long, long time!
