Should I get a second kitty?

Here is my problem.. I have a typical hyper boxer named BooBoo, 16 months & 75#... and we have a cat named Riley. Riley does not act like a cat at all, he doesn't jump onto high places, doesn't like catnip or cat toys, doesn't like to cuddle, and in general a scardy cat... BooBoo and Riley get along, but Riley would never let BooBoo get close enough to shower him with kisses and stuff...

what's worse is that lately Riley's been taking it out on me, scratching and biting hard on my hands when I'm asleep. I think he feels left-out as we tend to pay so much more attention to BooBoo...plus he doesn't come close to us enough for us to pamper him anyway...

So I thought we should get him a girly friend (don't worry, he's neutered) to see if that will improve his outlook on life. Sort of to draw him out of his weird cocoon and give him someone to hang out with. What do you guys think? Anyone had gone though a similar situation? I am only afraid that getting another cat might push him further into feeling un-loved in our family...

I don't think it's that he feels left out. I think that's just the way cats play. We went through a similar thing with Basil. We DID get a second cat (female) around the same age. It did wonders. They play rough with each other and save their cuddles mostly for us.

I should add that we did want another cat anyway. Basil is very much my cat, so the kids wanted one that would be more affectionate with them.

Looking at the age of Riley - he's around the same age as Basil was when he started taking skin off here too.

Expect him to be huffy for a few days, cats don't like change, but he should settle down within a week or so.

Help...

Here we go again, this morning at 5am as my cat Riley was sleeping in my arms and me sleeping peacefully, he starts to bite me... all about a dozen times before I pushed him off the bed and hid under the covers myself...

I tried not to push him off at first, letting him bit me until I really couldn't stand the pain, but he kept coming back to my hair, my face and my wrist. I looked like I was trying to slash myself this morning if you looked at my wrist.

What should I do? I read up on my cat experts on the web and they say to initiate a play game with him before going to sleep to release the possible pent up aggression, but my cat spends most of the time under the bed when we are home...

My cat is older, and he has never bit me that hard, but we got a 2nd cat about a year and a half ago and MAN they can tear up the house play fighting. Great exercise for both. I think if you WANT another cat you should try it, it is stressful introducing another cat into your house though as Reiley has been the only cat. Does he have claws? If so, it could get messy.
