Boxer Insane
When I brought Pearl home last October I was well aware that I would be disrupting my 'kitty karma' that I had with my three. Jules is 18 and stays in the computer room by herself since she doesn't get along with Shizzle or BusyBee. Jules has never been around a dog before but she is in total love. Pearl licks her all over, very gently and she gets sopping wet and comes back for more. I know that Pearl doesn't chase her because Jules can't run from her in the first place. Shizzle is a Siamese and is very laid back. Pearl will go up to him and sniff, poking her face all over, it seems she is trying to illicit some sort of response but he just sits there so she gives up. BusyBee is still running away from Pearl and this gets her chased all over. She has always been a high strung cat but she is very interested in Pearl when she is asleep so I think her fears are lessening.
In the first few weeks, Pearl was always on a leash in the house. During the day she comes to work with me so the cats had time to get used to her smell without being bothered. Since Pearl was rescued, I had no idea of her history so I was very careful.
I would suggest crating Dempsey initially and letting the new kitten explore. Then put kitten in a separate, closed off room (with toilet and food) and let Dempsey sniff. Depending on his behavior, keep them separate like this, rotating back and forth and they will acclimate to each other's scent. Both will be very curious but remember, new kitten is very squishy and makes a cute squeaky noise when stressed. I would never let them be out together alone until you are sure kitten can defend itself or escape somewhere safe. As others have said, it can work and it has worked for me but because Pearl has other issues, she is either crated when I leave or goes with me. Good luck! I have new kitten jealousy-- :D
