Should I get a boxer?

I fell in love with a picture of a boxer....I am partially disabled and need a companion who is also able to protect us if needed. I have a security system but would feel much better if I had a dog that would bark and growl if someone came near the house. I have heard some negative things about the boxer and was wanting some input from owners. I heard they are unmanageable, drool on everything, shed really bad, hard to train, ect. I hope these are all not true because I have my heart set on one. Cheryl

Read the boxer traits thread on the boxer board. I think boxers are great but not right for everyone. You would need to do more research to decide for yourself. Good luck making your decision

I can see how you would fall in love with a Boxer by just looking at a picture of one...but having one is so much better than just a picture!

They are not "unmanageable,," they don't "drool on everything," they don't "shed real bad," and they're not "hard to train."

A Boxer would most certainly provide you with the guard duty instincts you desire; the only thing I would see as a potential problem is that would you have anyone available to exercise the animal? Boxer do need to get their exercise.

Good luck to you no matter what you decide.

THANK YOU BOB!!!!
You just made my day!
I have an acre of land that is fenced in and I think running around on that would be plenty of exercise dont you? C

That would work. If I lived about 2500 miles closer to you I'd ask you if I could bring Ozzie over for a romp...

As a child I trained and showed labs so I am a veteran to handling dogs. I am not worried about having the ability but I want to make sure I choose the right breed. The research I have done seems to discourage the boxer, I just wanted to see what actual owners thought. I want a puppy because I know the psychological importance the first few weeks have an impact on. C

Boxers need lots of exercise. They have a lot of energy to burn. I have a big yard and I still take mine to the park. They go on lots of walks too.
I found my boxers to be very easy to train..very smart. They do drool and they do shed. One of boxers my drooled more and the other sheds more.
Boxers can have a lot of health problems....heart, cancer, and allergies. Please read up on the boxer to make sure that is the right breed for you.
They are the most loving loyal companion you'll ever know but, a boxer is not for everyone.

They'll only behave if you train them to... it takes lots of work but it can be done. These dogs act like pups even into old age. My 8 year old still thinks he's 8 months! :b
He doesn't have the nickname Boogie for nothing!! hehehe... my little booger can get a little slobbery at times. Boxers are steady shedders... they are shedding year round, and twice per year it increases. Those bittiy hairs will find their way into everything! I am trying to make it a habit to brush him every day now to reduce the hair in the house.
My boxer was fairly easy to train, they are very bright dogs. Good luck no matter what breed you decide on, good for you for doing your research first. :)

Welcome to BW!

Hi Cheryl!

I am super jealous about your land, I wish we had that here in San Diego. ;)

Good for you for doing your research first. Our boxer, Jake does well as far as protecting the house, he does bark at strangers that come over and walk by (not too many people do so when it happens he tells them who's house that is).

Our boxer is completely manageable, he doesn't drool on everything but he is only 4.5 months and is starting to drool (most boxers have some good drooling), our Jake does shed, but not really bad, and lastly he is not hard to train at all but the key is keeping on top of them when you teach them.

Just as many people owned by boxers have said, boxers are an amazing breed, they are incredibly smart and do have a TON of energy. I hope we've been able to help you with your decision and check out the boxer traits section here to help guide you in the right direction.

Best of luck and let us know what you decide. :)
