Hello all. I took Abby to get her yearly shots a couple days ago, and today I've noticed that the base of her neck where he gave her the shots was pretty swollen, and knotted up. I wasn't sure if that was normal, or anyone had any suggestions on it. Should I be worried about it, or give it a couple days?

I am sure that Abby is fine, but I would call the vet just to make sure. Inde's neck was never swollen, but she did get knots in her neck where the shots were given. They would go away in about a week and never seemed to bother her. Good luck and I hope everything is normal.:)

Unless, they swell up and actually break open, I would wait and give your vet a call on Monday. It sounds like a little reaction to the vaccination.

Please do a search on vaccinations & titers. You will find that many people are no longer giving yearly vaccinations. I have really changed my vaccination schedules. Most of my adults will never receive another vaccination. I have my vet do titer blood checks and have found they are well protected. I expect their titers to show they are well protected and may never have to give any of my older dogs another vaccination.

If all you are feeling is a small knot in the area of the shot....that is completely normal. It does occur sometimes. It has happened with my dogs from time to time and it generally goes away within a few days to a couple weeks at most.

Best Wishes!

It's actually not just small knots, you can see by just looking at her that it's swollen. When I first noticed that the base of her neck was swollen, I felt of it, and there is like a stripe across the base of her neck that is knotted up. It's not that I feel 2 little knots where he gave her the shots...the whole thing is noticably swollen. I'm going to wait until Monday and see how she is. She gets little bumps sometimes just out of he blue and my vet thinks she's having a little allergic reaction to something and suggested giving her 1/3 or 1/2 of a benydryl to see if that helps...I may try that. Maybe she's alleric to the meds he gave her.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips. She doesn't act like it bothers her when I mess with it, but she never acts like anything hurts (other than her sensitive feelings, of course), but she's not scratching at it or anything. So I feel better about that.

Thanks again everyone!

I let my girls outside one time on a nice day for some fresh air, and when I brought them back in, they both had little bumps on them. You could see them on Takoda because she is white, and you could feel them on Bo. How long did your dog have the bumps?

Takoda had a knot on her neck last time she had her shots, it really worried me also. But I just watched it closely, and it went away!!

Hope everything goes ok with Abby!!!

That's good to know. Thanks!! Like I said, she's acting normal and they don't seem to bother her...maybe I'm just being a worry-wart mother. ;)

Kyrie got a big bump on her butt after she got her rabies shot. Vet said to keep an eye on it. And if it got bigger, hurt her, or didnt go away after week or so to bring her back in. It went away with no problems!

After Xena's first annual shots, she got a knot on her neck that felt like a grape under her skin. It appeared exactly one week after her shots and took weeks to go down; the vet said as long as it keeps going down, not to worry about it.
