Shocking Vet Visit

I hate writing this post almost as much as I hated going through what I'm going to write about...

I had posted a while ago that my girl Rena was having some obvious neurologic problems and I took her to see the vet this past Friday. I was NOT expecting the visit to go the way it did.

They took her in the back to be weighed and take her temperature and as we waited (my dad came with me, thankfully) I mentioned to him that it sure was taking a while for them to bring her back. When she finally was brought back to the room, our vet had a look on her face that told me something was wrong. She told us that she had taken Rena outside and did a neurologic exam on her-failing it miserably. She said that it is something with her nervous system...and after consulting the other vets on the staff, they all concluded that the top diagnosis on their list was cancer..

Since Rena had no lumps anywhere and her symptoms were neurological, it is assumed she has a brain tumor. As soon as those words came in my ears, the tears burst from my eyes like a flood gate had been opened. The love of my life was dying...and I had no clue.

The doctor said that she could tell her dull mental state drastically from her last visit, only a few months prior. She told me that Rena's "spark was gone". I love this vet because she is also a boxer owner and really seems to care about my dogs. Also, Rena had went from 80 lbs. to 63 in two months. Her wasting was another signal of cancer. I was concerned if she was in pain, but the vet assured me that as of right now, she wasn't. It was up to me to judge Rena's quality of life...as long as she can eat, drink, use the bathroom and get around on her own, she was "ok".

So I've cried continuously at the thought of having to maybe someday (sooner than later) have to make the choice to have her put down. It breaks my heart to see her in the condition she is in, but when is it being selfish?

Any words of hope or advice are appreciated!

I am so sorry that you got such devatating news.

What did your vet recommend for treatment. Did she suggest doing any more tests to confirm it, like an MRI?

I'm sending positve healing vibes your way.

The vet mentioned doing x-rays and such, but she agrees that even when you confirm it from tests, there's still not much you can do to treat it..seeing as though Rena is pretty old-est. 8 or 9. Our vet told us that even if she had chemo, that would only give her about 6 months. Also, if it is a brain tumor, brain surgery is not much of an option to me-for the obvious reasons.

So our plan for now is to give her Prednisone to help her feel "better" and spoil her rotten. I've always had to watch her diet (she was obese at one point-thyroid problems) and now she pigs out on anything she can eat. Another thing to mention, the vet told me that thyroid medicine can speed up the growth of cancer-which would explain why she went down hill rapidly after starting Thyrosin.

They also said that they had a difficult time hearing her heart-possibly she has fluid around it. They said her pulse was strong, and they are almost 100% positive she doesn't have a heart condition. One of the other possibilities given to us was a fungal infection of some sort that could only be tested for through spinal cord fluid-which is dangerous in itself. My vet said the chances of it being something like that were very slim...if she was a different breed other than a boxer, it might be possible..but still not likely.

Thanks for all your good vibes! As Rena lays on her squishy fleece bed, she sends her sloppy boxer kisses!

So sorry to hear about your poor Rena - these stories always bring back painful memories for me. The vets at your clinic seem so sure that it is cancer, so I assume the diagnosis was confirmed by MRI. Have they at least started her on prednisone to reduce the swelling? Sending you healing thoughts and prayers - Cathy

I can tell Rena is loved very much, and I'm sure that she knows that too. I know that nothing will really help you to feel any better at this time, just know that there are many people here who can understand how you are feeling.
All you can do at this point is spoil her rotten. To answer your question, I don't think you are being selfish about it as long as she is living comfortably and is not suffering. As hard as it is to imagine having to make that horrible decision, you will know when the time is right. You just know in your heart. I wish you all the best, and my thoughts are with you.
