I have a 1 1/2 year old male and a 5 month old female. I am feeding them Purina Dog Chow/ Purina Puppy Chow. As this is what my dogs have always eaten. However I have noticed that their coats aren't as shiny as they could be. Could this mean a lack of nutrients. Most people on here talk about NB. Is this a good all around food for Boxers? Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I don't want to sound mean...but you are feeding your dogs some of the worst food out there. The first ingredient in the dog chow is corn...which has very little nutritional value and can lead to food allergies.
Dogs need meat, and lots of it.

When I first got Coco, I fed her purina. I then switched her to Blue Buffalo(4 star) and couldn't get over the difference it made in her coat. It made it shiny and really soft. I just switched over to Taste of the Wild(6 star), to change up her food so I will see how that goes.
After reading the reviews on different foods, I too was looking to start on the TOTW also. It looked like one of the best for what I could get in my area. I live in a small town so the selections aren't huge.

It was recommended to me by someone on Boxer World to try Natural Balance Limited Ingredient formula. I have Maggie on the Sweet Potato and Venison and I mix in a heaping tablespoon of the canned Sweet Potato and Fish, or Lamb or Beef. I had tried many different foods before this, but she is doing so well on this brand and people are always saying how beautiful her coat is( shiny and soft). She is almost a year old and weighs about 65 pounds. She seems to be in good health. Good Luck

It all depends on your dog. I had Tyson on NB sweet potato and fish and his coat was dry. I swictched him to Orijen Puppy and I noticed a big difference. I think the fatty % was too low for him. I now have him on Orijen 6 Fish for the last month and I get complaints constantly about his coat. The 6 fish is an all stages food so puppies can benefit from it too.

I feed Natural Balance either Venison and Sweet Potato, Fish and Sweet Potato, or Chicken and Sweet Potato and 2-3 times a week give canned of the same or some boiled chicken along with fish oil and vitamin E daily and both of my dogs have great coats.
I would absolutely switch your dog's food, regardless of coat improvement, but for an overall health improvement.

I have had my older dog on a variety of foods (she is a shepard collie) like purina, and pedigree. When I got my boxer puppy I really wanted to get him on a good high quality food, in doing so I found dog food analysis really helpful. I have had both my dogs on Natures Prairie, whch is a 5 star food, and I have never seen my dogs coats so shiny and soft, especially my older one! I would deffinatly change their food, there is much better stuff out there.

I've had nothing but amazing luck with TOTW... It's the only food so far that my boy has had solid poop all the time on. And the price of it compared to other 6 star foods is great. Good luck with it!
