I went to vet today to get Aasha his monthly heart worm pill. When I was there I asked the staff about his shedding. He has been shedding like crazy here. It has recently gotten cold here and has been cooler over the past weeks because of winter. I know boxers shed alot, but to me he sheds alot alot. So I asked them what it could be coming from. They told me since it has been cold and we have been using the heat inside the house that the dry heat probably has dried his skin and that's why he is shedding excessively. So what do you guys think? And what I do to fix it?

A possible answer....

What are you feeding Aasha? I have a 4 year old male that has been itching and shedding. He was still on his antihistamine into December. My vet suggested fish oil. He's about 75# and my vet suggested 2 capsules a day. I started him on that Dec 1 and has minimal scratching, but still a little shedding after a week. He hasn't had his antihistamine in about 4 days and things are looking good so far. The vet said I wouldn't see the full benefit for about a month, so I'm hoping for the best for the next 3 weeks. Brutus eats Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato formula. Had been allergy tested at 2 years old and it came back negative. So I don't know why he's shedding and itching, but it might be the indoor dry heat. Hope this helps.

Aasha eats candiade(Sorry if spelled wrong). He has eaten this since 8 weeks. Hasen't had this problem until about the last two months or so. I went to petsmart today and got some ultra moisturizing shampoo to help his skin and a brush called the furminater. Anyone ever used this brush or familair with it. It's suppose to be real good at getting all the hair off when brushing. So plan on giving him bath with new shampoo and brushing him real good and see what happens from there. Does anyone know what kind of supplement I can give him to help moisturize his skin more?

Hi Aasha! How did you like the furminator?

I have been thinking about getting one, I have a pug that sheds 24/7 :0(
I am planning on getting a boxer puppy after christmas (he won't be ready to go until then :0)

Thanks for the info!

Let me know how the furminator is...I saw it too and was wondering...Laila sheds a lot, we brush her but the hairs still get everywhere...I have had her on Salmon oil a while , no scratching and she has the shiniest softest coat!...Barbara lovicon

The furminator works great! I was amazed on how much hair I had brushed off of him. If I could just get him to stay still when I do it now! lol :)

I was a professional groomer for 16 years and I wonder about the Furminator on Boxers as it is said to be best used to get out the fluffy undercoat (which Boxers don't really have) and leave the top (guard) coat intact. I have not looked at this product closely, but it seems to be a pretty sharp "blade" that I would be concerned about scratching/scraping the skin on a Boxer.

The product I use on Tag is a rubber curry comb/brush commonly used on horses. There is no worry of it scraping the skin, although if used too hard for too long on an area where there is sparse hair, you can get some redness.

Another great benefit to this product is that it costs around $5 as opposed to the $40 a Furminator can cost. Here is a link to get an idea of what the rubber curry I am speaking of looks like: http://www.fourpaws.com/products/rubber-curry-brush-for-dogs.htm
The rubber curry can be found at Petsmart and most other pet supply stores.

I have nothing against the Furminator, I have just never used it on a Boxer and I don't really think it is the best product for our breed to reduce/eliminate shedding. JMHO :)

When it comes to shedding, has anyone tried the Dynavite? that is advertised sometimes on this site?? I'm very tempted to try it. J.J. is shedding horribly right now. She is on Canidae and eats approximately 2-3 cups a day. She is 60# and is 15 mths old. By the way, when is a pup no longer considered a pup??
