My boxer is 10 months old and is shedding more than he is supposed to (or what I think he is supposed to). I thought boxers shed small amounts all year around and for the last 2 weeks he is shedding massive amounts of hair, I would say around 2-3 cups a day. We haven't changed food or shampoo and he is brushed weekly as we have done since he was small.
What is going on ????? Someone Please Help!

it could be one of 2 things.
the first is what kind of food is he on? even though you have not changed his food it could still cause a problem

next it could be allergies. boxers tend to get allergies so you might want to look into that.

as far as bathing goes dogs do not need to be bathed to much it does cause there skin to dry out.

So his amount of shedding is abnormal ? In other words is it time to see the vet ?

What Trish is saying, is that it could be perfectly normal. Boxers do shed quite a bit (especially this time of year).

However, there are a few things you can do, to minimize shedding:

(a) Feed a high quality diet
(b) Reduce the amount of baths that you give, and use a mild (oatmeal-based) shampoo when you do bathe

Your Boxer should only need a bath once every 4-6 months :)

Thanks for all the info ....

We feed him Pro Plan puppy and his shampoo is an oatmeal based so hopefully between that and trying to add the oil to his food per some other threads I read and hope for the best.

Now he is starting to loose patches of hair!

Well we went from massive shedding to now patches of hair are missing it appears he has scratched those areas where hair is missing, none on his head or feet like all the ringworm information online is showing. So now very confused.
I'm worried about mange or still even ringworm. He has an appt with the Vet this Saturday but not sure what I should do until then not knowing what it is. I've moved his kennell out on the screened in porch as the fear he has something to spread to my children.

HI I am a dog groomer and see this happen with a lot of dogs with flea dermatitus. They don't even need to have the flea bite them just crawl on them and they scratch and bite on themselves until their hair falls out. Also some are allergic to grass, dirt ect.and this also happens. I would check with your vet sometimes they can help you narrow it down.

Update 6/16/05

We took Niko to the vet this morning and after all of this he is just shedding his puppy coat. The vet did all the tests and everything came back fine!

We will be changing his food slowly to something better per your comments. Any suggestions as I can't seem to find the "Go Natural". Also I read on a forum about using oil just can't remember which oil to use in his food.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts

I add salmon oil and raw eggs to my boys' food for their coats. The salmon oil I give daily, and they get raw eggs about 2 times a week. I've also heard of giving them flax seeds oil.
