I know this really isn't a "health issue" but I thought this was probably the most important place to post. I have a 10 month old flashy brindle that sheds horibbly! I cannot vaccum and sweep enough. We bathe him, brush him, ect and nothing cuts down on the amount of hair he is loosing. Even when you pet him you can see hair flying off of him. It seems to be his white hair more than his darker hair...any suggestions? Thanks.

Hmm, not sure about that one. Cash only sheds profusely when he is super excited or nervous like when people come over or at the vet or in my car that has black interior, lol. How often are you bathing him? We try to keep Cash on a 2 week (if that often) bath rotation so he doesn't get dried out, and brush him after his bath.

Hey I don't know if this will help or pertain to you at all, but this is what happened with my boxer. I have a 7 month old fawn boxer, and he sheds soooo much, all over everything, everyone, and it wouldn't stop. I did some research, and because even with such a short haired dog, the change between winter and summer are really significant. I know its winter and they should be keeping their coat, but we have a fireplace (electric) and heaters that our dog loves to be around. So if your house is warm, then the dogs body thinks that it is always summer, so the dog is always shedding. The only problem with that is, my boxer is such a wimp and does not like the cold of outside, so he would rather stay inside and loose his fur :( I don't know if that helps you out at all or gives you more options to think from, but I hope it is just something as simple as your puppy being warm :) Have a Merry Christmas!!!

Sorry its been a while since I posted this...but here are some answers. I asked the vet too.

He is 11 months old and stays inside. We don't keep our house really warm. When the heater is on its set between 68-72 depending on how cold it is. He has been eating Eukenuba Puppy food since he was about 4 months old.

The vet said it was due to him being an inside dog. She said that they shed constantly because they do not get exposure to the weather extremes that outside dogs do...

I'd say it's a big portion of what you're feeding him. If you check out Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble Eukanuba is one of the lowest grade foods you can feed. I would urge you to choose a 4, 5, or 6 star food off of the DFA website and add in some fish oil (human kind you can get at Costco or Wal-Mart is fine), typically it's 1,000mg per 20 pounds of body weight and some vitamin E (again human is fine, one 400 IU capsule 3-7 times a week), and I think you'll see the shedding reduce greatly.

My dogs are inside almost 24/7 I keep my house at 76 all year long and my dogs do not shed much at all and both are boxers. I also feed a healthy food and give fish oil and vitamin E.

This is an interesting thread. With previous boxers we fed what we thought were higher grade foods, eg. Eukenuba. Compared to some long haired dogs, shedding seemed minor. Saying that, the back of our fabirc couches were a favorite place to rub on, which they did constantly. We had to relentlessly vacumn them, or the considerable build up of hair would disgust any guest. I also recall an occasional cloud of hair flying around.

We learned the truth about food from this site, and have only fed Layla the higher grade foods. We do not suppliment. We are in Atlanta and she is an "indoor" dog, (as I hope most boxers are.)

Until this thread I hadn't thought about it. Layla rarely rubs on the couches and they don't need to be vacumned. She clearly sheds far less than our other girls.

I can't confirm this is because of the food, but seems to make sense. The better foods really don't cost that much when considering everything else plus the health benefits. I agree with others, try a very high grade food.

shedding...

We're on boxer #5 & #6 and we swear by jackets! We live in MI and have a horse farm. The girls LOVE the snow and the barn so leaving them inside when it's cold is not an option. They both have heavy quilted jackets (just like our horse blankets) that they wear every time they go out. We've done this with all of the dogs & have had great luck with it. We don't have a shedding problem, ever.

Good Luck!
