Jackson is my 2 year old boy (Brindle).....his coat is course and does not have a real noticable sheen to it. He also seems to be shedding heavily. I know that they should shed more at this time of the year but his seems to be a lot. Should I be giving him something to give him a nicer coat? Any suggestions? I have heard of people giving their dogs "grease" on their food but that doesn't sound real healthy to me.
His meals only consist of dry food.....I wonder if some soft food in his diet would help?

To a large extent the type of coat a dog has is just a matter of genetics. But nutrition can play a part too. What kibble do you feed him? Feeding a premium quality food that doesn't contain cheap grains or byproducts rather than low quality foods like Eukanuba and Purina can help, as can supplements such as a raw egg a couple of times a week (not more or it'll have the opposite effect) and some good quality olive or salmon oil.

Try shampooing him with a shampoo suitable for sensitive dog skin (to remove the hair that is shedding and clean him up), and then use some olive oil in his food for a couple of months. (Only olive oil, not any other kind of vegetable oil).

It works miracles! We use it in Martin's food ever since he was a puppy and the vet says that it helps their skin and hair remain in top shape and also provides him with lots of nutricious elements and vitamins.

Avoid him getting wet because it water removes the natural oil that his skin has that also helps maintain a shining coat. Often, shampooing them or washing them too often will have the adverse effect of making their hair look shineless and harsh.

You may also try to massage his hair with a brush, this stimulates the oil producing glens that are present in their skin, and also relieves their skin from dead hair.

Hope this helps.

olive oil

Is that true to give your dog olive oil... My boxer is having an issue with dry elbow and very dry bottom of paws. I stopped the food i started her on and switch back to her other one but i was unaware of olive oil helping them...
