Ok, so Lexi has been scratching at her throat alot lately and it is really starting to bother me because now she has scratched half of her hair off and the area is really starting to look yucky and infected. I have been cleaning it 3x daily with warm water and then using Peroxide to clean it more and then putting neosporin on the area and giving her penicillan every 12 hours. She seems to be scratching less, but I'm worried about her developing a worse infection than what she already has. Should I be wrapping this while we are with her during the day and then letting it "breathe" at night? Anyone have any suggestions? I don't know what to do at this point. I'm also worried about our other female who just plays rough in general. They get along great but she likes to play rough with both our dogs, worried about her hitting Lexi in the neck and hurting Lex. Any suggestions? Anyone? HELP!!

At this point it sounds like you need to call the vet. Also I'd stop washing it with peroxide, it actually can damage skin tissue and cause it not to heal. You really need a medical professional to look at it and advise you at this point as well as find out WHY she is scratching like that so that it can be stopped for long term.

Good luck.

I agree I would probably make a trip to the vet also. But in the mean time I wouldn't use warm water to wash the area, use cool water as it is more soothing. Also a hydrocortisone spray will help relieve some of the itching. I'm also going to state the obvious. If she has a collar on, take it off. I realize she would need one for walks and such but as soon as you get in take it off. It would also probably be a good idea to wash it in a mild detergent and rinse it really well afterwards. If this seems to be a new problem I would also wipe Lexi and the collar down after coming in from outside. She maybe getting some kind of pollen or something underneath there that she is allergic to. Good luck and lots of healing ((vibes)) coming Lexi's way!

Bonny had the exact same thing and it turned out she had food allergies! No wheat or gluten for my baby now.
If she ever has problems with her neck now I put some nappy rash cream on her and it really helps.
